U.S. Air Force Transport Plane Arrives in Paraguay with Fire Truck and Equipment, Enhancing Wildfire Fighting Capabilities

ASUNCION, Paraguay – A massive U.S. Air Force transport plane has landed at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Paraguay, carrying a fire truck and firefighting equipment. This donation is expected to significantly contribute to strengthening Paraguay's capacity to respond to the large-scale wildfires and fires that recur annually.

On Saturday night (local time, June 28, 2025), a U.S. Air Force Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy, one of the largest military transport aircraft in the world, touched down on the runway of Silvio Pettirossi Airport. The transport plane was carrying a fire truck and various pieces of firefighting equipment, donated to the Paraguayan Armed Forces by the Massachusetts Air National Guard (MANG).

This donation is part of a cooperative relationship that has spanned over 20 years between the Massachusetts Air National Guard and the Paraguayan Armed Forces. Both sides have maintained a close relationship, particularly aiming to strengthen wildfire suppression and disaster response capabilities. Paraguay suffers extensive damage annually from large-scale wildfires during the dry season, which not only impacts its agricultural economy but also leads to ecological destruction and loss of life. In this situation, the donation of this fire truck and equipment is expected to significantly enhance the immediate response capabilities needed by the Paraguayan Armed Forces to support citizens, protect agricultural facilities, and preserve the nation's unique flora and fauna.

Wildfires in Paraguay primarily occur due to the dry climate and human negligence. In particular, uncontrolled burning for land clearing or trash incineration often escalates into large-scale wildfires. In 2019 and 2020, the worst wildfires on record occurred in the Amazon rainforest region, including Paraguay and neighboring Bolivia and Brazil, causing international concern. At that time, Paraguay also experienced extensive forest loss, particularly in the Chaco region, which led to a decrease in biodiversity and an increase in carbon emissions. These experiences underscored Paraguay's urgent need to strengthen its fire suppression and prevention capabilities.

The donated C-5M Super Galaxy transport aircraft is a key strategic airlifter for the U.S. Air Force, boasting the capability to carry up to 122 tons of cargo anywhere in the world. It is especially specialized in transporting large equipment or vehicles, making it suitable for this fire truck delivery. The U.S. Department of Defense actively conducts similar donation and training programs to enhance the disaster response capabilities of partner nations worldwide. This serves as a form of humanitarian aid while also holding strategic significance in contributing to regional security and stability.

Officials from the National Directorate of Civil Aviation (DINAC) at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport emphasized last October, when a similar donation occurred, that they ensure the safe takeoff and landing of large aircraft. This once again highlights the importance of the airport's infrastructure in enabling the successful landing of this large transport plane.

This donation of a fire truck and equipment is expected to provide practical assistance to the Paraguayan Armed Forces in strengthening their response capabilities to natural disasters such as wildfires. Furthermore, it will contribute to ensuring the safety and survival of Paraguayan citizens and protecting the nation's vital agricultural resources and natural environment. The Paraguayan government and its people express their gratitude for this U.S. support and hope that the cooperative relationship between the two countries will continue to strengthen in the future.
