Google has launched Gemini 2.0, its latest suite of AI models, making it available to all users. This move is seen as a direct challenge to Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which recently gained attention for its cost-effective and high-performing AI models.
Gemini 2.0, initially introduced in December, was previously accessible only to select developers and testers. The newly released suite includes:
Gemini 2.0 Flash: Optimized for large-scale repetitive tasks, this model is integrated into the Gemini app for immediate use.
Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental: Focused on coding performance, this model is available in preview through Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite: A lighter version of Flash, this model is touted as the most cost-efficient option in the Gemini family.
Google emphasizes that Gemini 2.0 is its most powerful AI model yet, boasting multimodal capabilities that handle text, images, and videos. It is also designed to be highly adaptable for the age of AI agents.
The Flash-Lite model, in particular, is seen as a direct competitor to DeepSeek's V3 and R1 models. DeepSeek's recent emergence with affordable yet powerful AI models has disrupted the AI industry, where development costs often dictate user pricing.
According to Reuters, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite is priced at $0.019 per million tokens (the unit of data processed by AI models). This is comparable to DeepSeek's models, which cost $0.014, and significantly cheaper than OpenAI's cost-efficient version at $0.075.
Google's release of Gemini 2.0 comes as the company's stock recently declined by over 7% due to lower-than-expected growth in its cloud business. The company's strategic focus on AI development and cost-effective solutions like Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite may be seen as an effort to regain investor confidence and solidify its position in the competitive AI market.
