NunuTV Operator Arrested for Illegal Streaming

Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Copyright Crime Scientific Investigation Division announced on November 10th that it had arrested the operator of the illegal streaming website NunuTV. The websites "TVWiki" and "OKTOON," also operated by the same individual, have been shut down.

NunuTV, launched in 2021, had been a major source of controversy due to its illegal streaming of copyrighted content from domestic and international OTT platforms. Despite the government's efforts to shut it down, the website repeatedly resurfaced under different domain names, often using servers located in countries like the Dominican Republic to evade detection.

Last year, after the Ministry of Science and ICT began blocking the website's URLs on a daily basis, NunuTV temporarily shut down, only to return as "NunuTV Season 2" a few days later. However, due to continued government pressure, the website was forced to shut down again in June of the same year.

In June of this year, NunuTV resurfaced with a Paraguayan address, prompting the Copyright Crime Scientific Investigation Division to intensify its efforts to track down the operator.

A notice currently appears on the TVWiki website, stating: "The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Copyright Crime Scientific Investigation Division arrested the operator of the illegal streaming website NunuTV on November 9, 2024, and confiscated the illegal webtoon site OKTOON, which was also operated by the same individual."

The arrest of the NunuTV operator marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against illegal online streaming in South Korea. It serves as a warning to others who seek to profit from the illegal distribution of copyrighted content.
