On September 3 (Thursday), Gyeongsangbuk-do held the 'Gyeongbuk Growth Artificial Intelligence (AI) Talent Development Strategy Seminar' in the provincial government conference room, with attendees including officials from the Gyeongbuk Research Institute, Gyeongbuk Economic Promotion Agency, Gyeongbuk Technopark, Gyeongbuk Anchor Center, and local universities such as Yeungnam University. During the seminar, strategies were discussed to transform universities into core hubs for AI talent development and industry-academia-research cooperation.
Yoo Chul-gyun, President of the Gyeongbuk Research Institute, emphasized the proactive role of universities, stating, "In the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), universities should no longer be places that simply transmit knowledge and certify its reproduction, but should transform into hubs that cultivate humans who can evaluate the outputs produced by AI and take responsibility for the results."
Following this, Park Jun-ho, General Planning Team Leader at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Anchor Center, suggested that local universities should be fostered as core hubs for the AI transformation of local industries. Park Jae-chan, Head of the AI Anchor University Project Group at Yeungnam University, stated that Yeungnam University will serve as a hub university in fostering region-customized AI talent and building an enterprise-linked ecosystem.
Taking this seminar as an opportunity, Gyeongsangbuk-do is materializing its vision of the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Talent Innovation University,' a core task of the 9th popular election term. The province is already operating the 'AI Strategic Industry Anchor University' project with an investment of 20 billion won over four years, and is pushing to build an 'AI Convergence Innovation (AI-X) Ecosystem' centered around Yeungnam University, aiming to foster approximately 4,000 AI convergence talents.
Moving forward, the province plans to expand this initiative to all universities, create an 'AI Anchor Special Zone,' and foster it as an innovation hub connecting talent cultivation to employment, startups, and regional settlement.
Lee Sang-soo, Director General of Local Government Strategy at Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the most powerful weapon that enables regions to compete with the world. Beyond education, universities must become the center of growth where they research advanced technologies together with companies and solve regional problems utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI)."
He added, "We will actively strive to ensure that universities innovate their overall systems using Artificial Intelligence (AI) first, so that young people can receive world-class Artificial Intelligence (AI) education right here in the region, find good jobs, and fulfill their dreams."
