Samsung Heavy Industries Unveils Advanced Deepwater FLNG Solution, Garners Key Certifications to Spearhead Offshore Gas Development

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), a global leader in shipbuilding and offshore engineering, has announced a significant breakthrough in its technological prowess with the development of a cutting-edge standard model for deepwater Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) production facilities. The company solidified its position at the forefront of offshore energy solutions by securing fundamental design approvals for its proprietary 'MLF-O' model from three of the world's leading classification societies: DNV (Norway), Lloyd's Register (LR, United Kingdom), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The certifications were formally awarded on May 5th at the prestigious Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2025 held in Houston, Texas, a premier global event for the offshore energy sector.

The newly engineered MLF-O represents a significant leap forward in FLNG technology, specifically tailored for the demanding conditions of ultra-deepwater environments characterized by average wave heights exceeding 9 meters. This robust design underscores SHI's commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the offshore gas industry, which is increasingly venturing into more challenging and remote deepwater fields to meet global energy demands.

A key innovation integrated into the MLF-O design is its optimized cargo tank configuration. By arranging the cargo tanks in a two-row layout, SHI engineers have effectively minimized the internal sloshing impact of liquefied natural gas during vessel motion in rough seas. Sloshing, the movement of liquid cargo within its tanks, can exert significant forces on the vessel's structure, particularly in harsh offshore conditions. The MLF-O's design mitigates this risk, enhancing the operational safety and longevity of the FLNG facility.

This latest development complements SHI's existing portfolio, which includes the 'MLF-N' model, a standard FLNG solution developed in 2023 specifically for nearshore applications. With the introduction of the MLF-O, Samsung Heavy Industries has now established a comprehensive standard lineup of FLNG solutions catering to a broad spectrum of offshore gas field development scenarios, from shallow coastal waters to the most challenging deepwater frontiers.

One of the primary advantages of SHI's MLF series, as highlighted by the company, is the significantly faster delivery times achievable compared to traditional onshore LNG liquefaction plants. Onshore projects are often complex, requiring extensive land acquisition, infrastructure development, and intricate construction processes, leading to protracted timelines. FLNG facilities, being largely constructed in controlled shipyard environments, offer a more streamlined and potentially quicker path to bringing gas reserves online.

Furthermore, the MLF design offers considerable flexibility in terms of storage capacity. The standard cargo tank capacity starts at 180,000 cubic meters, but the modular design allows for expansion up to 220,000 cubic meters to accommodate the specific requirements of different gas field developments. This scalability makes the MLF series an adaptable solution for a variety of project sizes and production volumes.

With the robust credentials of the MLF-O and the established track record of the MLF-N, Samsung Heavy Industries is strategically positioned to aggressively pursue new contracts for the development of offshore gas fields worldwide. The demand for natural gas as a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels is projected to remain strong in the coming decades, and FLNG technology is expected to play an increasingly crucial role in unlocking remote and deepwater gas reserves that were previously economically or technically challenging to access.

Jang Hae-gi, the Head of Samsung Heavy Industries' Technology Development Division, expressed confidence in the new technology, stating, "MLF-O is an innovative solution that minimizes operating costs and significantly reduces delivery times, thereby meeting customer needs. We will maintain a super-gap as a first mover in the FLNG market." This statement underscores SHI's ambition to not only be a key player but also a technological leader in the burgeoning FLNG sector. The emphasis on minimizing operational expenses is particularly relevant in the capital-intensive offshore energy industry, where efficiency and cost-effectiveness are paramount.

The basic design certification from DNV, LR, and ABS is a critical milestone in the development of any offshore structure. These independent classification societies rigorously assess the design against stringent safety and operational standards, ensuring that the vessel or platform meets international regulations and industry best practices. Obtaining these certifications for the MLF-O validates the soundness and reliability of SHI's design, providing assurance to potential clients and stakeholders.

The development of advanced deepwater FLNG solutions like the MLF-O is pivotal for the future of global energy supply. As easily accessible onshore and shallow offshore gas fields mature, the industry is increasingly looking towards deepwater and ultra-deepwater reserves to meet growing energy demands. FLNG technology offers a compelling solution for these remote locations, eliminating the need for long subsea pipelines to onshore processing facilities, thereby reducing costs and environmental impact.

Samsung Heavy Industries' proactive investment in FLNG technology positions the company to capitalize on this evolving energy landscape. By establishing a comprehensive portfolio of both nearshore and deepwater standard models, SHI is demonstrating its commitment to innovation and its readiness to meet the diverse needs of the global offshore gas development market. The successful acquisition of basic design certifications for the MLF-O is a testament to SHI's engineering expertise and its potential to be a dominant force in the next generation of offshore gas production. The industry will be closely watching as SHI leverages these advancements to secure new projects and further solidify its leadership in the FLNG sector.
