Apple is widely expected to enter the foldable smartphone market soon, prompting major Chinese competitors Huawei and Xiaomi to stage a simultaneous offensive. On September 7, 2026, both tech giants held product launch events in China, showcasing cutting-edge foldable devices packed with proprietary semiconductor technology. This coordinated rollout highlights how Chinese manufacturers are intensifying competition in a market historically pioneered by Samsung, while simultaneously accelerating their push for domestic semiconductor self-sufficiency.

Huawei’s headline-grabbing release was the "Mate XT2," the successor to the world's first commercial tri-fold smartphone introduced in 2024. Unveiled at an event in Guangzhou, the Mate XT2 expands into a full tablet-sized display when fully unfolded. Despite carrying a hefty price tag ranging from 19,999 yuan (approximately $2,800 USD) to 24,999 yuan (approximately $3,500 USD), initial pre-orders launched on August 31 sold out completely, with official sales set to begin on September 12. Richard Yu, Huawei’s executive director, acknowledged the severe cost pressures during the presentation, noting that skyrocketing memory component expenses presented a major hurdle, though the company managed to integrate numerous breakthroughs. Under the hood, the Mate XT2 is powered by the new "Kirin 9050 Pro" chip, which applies "logic folding" technology based on Huawei’s proprietary "Tau Law" performance theory.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi fired its own salvo on the same evening by debuting the "Xiaomi 18 Fold," a mid-sized foldable device. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun noted that the project began two years ago and involved 20 months of intensive research and development, positioning it as the crown jewel of Xiaomi’s current smartphone lineup. The device features an aesthetic closely resembling the "passport-style" design anticipated for Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone. Crucially, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is equipped with Xiaomi’s self-developed "Xring O3" processor and LPDDR6 memory supplied by Chinese memory chip maker Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT).

Industry analysts view these preemptive product launches as a dual response of viewing Apple's impending entry into the foldable arena as both a critical threat and a massive growth opportunity. Ivan Lam, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, pointed out that Apple commands the world's largest base of premium device users and will likely capture market share rapidly upon release. However, Lam also noted that Apple’s entry could expand consumer awareness and elevate overall demand for foldable form factors across the board, benefiting rival manufacturers as well.

Beyond the hardware and form factor competition, the launch serves as a stark indicator of China's accelerated drive toward technological self-reliance. Both Huawei and Xiaomi showcased deeply localized hardware ecosystems by prominently featuring homegrown processors and domestically produced memory components. As the global smartphone market navigates broader demand stagnation, the battle for the ultra-premium foldable segment has clearly entered a new, highly competitive phase.
