Windrose Technology, a Chinese electric long-haul truck startup, is leading the charge in revolutionizing the global heavy-duty truck industry. Founder and CEO Han Wen attributes this transformation to the advent of electric trucks, which has shifted the industry's dynamics and positioned China as a formidable competitor.
Historically, the core technology of traditional heavy-duty trucks—internal combustion engines—was predominantly controlled by European and American companies. As a result, European and American markets were less inclined to adopt heavy-duty trucks manufactured in China, Han explained.
However, the landscape has dramatically changed with the rise of electric trucks. Key components such as batteries, electric motors, and electric drive systems, along with intelligent driving technologies, are areas where China has demonstrated significant expertise. Han highlighted Windrose Technology as "the first Chinese truck company to have received orders from developed economies like Europe and the United States, as well as the first Chinese truck company to test on four continents."
China's burgeoning new energy vehicle (NEV) industry has been a catalyst for this transformation. The country's NEV market share, which was just over 1% in 2015, has surged due to the accelerated green transition of the Chinese economy.
Global Expansion and Partnerships
The evolving landscape of the global heavy-duty truck sector is evident in the recent advancements made by Chinese heavy truck manufacturers in expanding their global presence and collaborations.
Windrose Technology has established manufacturing facilities in both the United States and Belgium, securing the World Manufacturing Identifier (WMI) in both locations. The company is set to commence deliveries in the United States in the first half of 2025 and in Europe in the second half.
Windrose has already secured orders from European countries including Denmark, Belgium, and France, as well as the United States and New Zealand. Moreover, the company is planning to expand into the German market and establish a truck parts factory in France.
To date, Windrose trucks have successfully completed cross-regional and multi-route road tests in 14 countries and regions, including China, Europe, the United States, and Australia.
In a parallel development, Garrett Motion Inc. and China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co., Ltd. (Sinotruk) have signed a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation on advanced technologies for electric commercial vehicles. The two companies aim to jointly develop a leading next-generation electric powertrain for integration into Sinotruk's product portfolio. They also plan to collaborate on mass production of trucks equipped with this e-powertrain by 2027.
Sinotruk's heavy-duty trucks have garnered a substantial global market, particularly in Belt and Road partner countries. In 2023, the company exported 130,100 heavy trucks, marking a 47% year-on-year surge. Sinotruk has made significant strides in the new energy sector, developing pure electric, fuel cell, and hybrid heavy-duty trucks.
Performance and Efficiency Driving Demand
When explaining the reasons behind the growing popularity of Chinese electric heavy-duty trucks, Han noted that while personal preferences such as brand, aesthetics, and interior design influence the purchase of electric passenger vehicles, the performance and functionality of the vehicle are paramount for heavy-duty trucks.
Han emphasized that Chinese electric heavy-duty trucks and electric buses, primarily targeting the business-to-business market, offer superior performance and efficiency, making them highly attractive to businesses seeking to reduce their environmental impact. Windrose's electric heavy trucks boast a range of up to 670 kilometers and lower energy consumption compared to their European and U.S. counterparts. Additionally, Windrose vehicles offer approximately 50% more interior space.
"Not only are we providing a cleaner truck, we are also providing a really cheaper truck," Han said in a previous interview.
The Global Shift to Green Transportation
The global trend toward green transportation is driving the demand for electric heavy-duty trucks. Large global enterprises, seeking to reduce their carbon footprints, are increasingly turning to electric vehicles for their transportation operations.
"Our clients are large global enterprises, such as Nike and Decathlon, who require the use of electric trucks for their global transportation operations. This provides us with the opportunity to deliver goods for them globally," Han told Xinhua.
