HD Hyundai Infracore, a construction equipment affiliate of HD Hyundai, announced on November 4th that it has formed a strategic partnership with US-based ammonia-based hydrogen fuel cell specialist Amogy and SK Innovation to develop a clean ammonia-hydrogen power generation system.
The three companies aim to commercialize a hydrogen engine power generation system that uses clean hydrogen produced from ammonia by 2027.
HD Hyundai Infracore will develop a 22-liter hydrogen internal combustion engine for power generation, while Amogy will develop an "ammonia cracker," a device that breaks down ammonia to produce clean hydrogen. The companies will collaborate to identify commercial opportunities for the clean ammonia-hydrogen power generation system.
HD Hyundai Infracore plans to enter the distributed power generation system market, which involves installing power generation facilities in new towns and residential areas, as well as the government-led clean hydrogen power auction market with the newly developed system.
Ammonia is considered a practical alternative for clean hydrogen generation as it can remain liquid at higher temperatures and has a lower risk of ignition and explosion compared to hydrogen, making it easier to transport and store.
"By combining our advanced hydrogen engine technology with ammonia decomposition technology, we will contribute to the activation of the clean hydrogen power generation market," said an official at HD Hyundai Infracore. "We will continue to enhance the commercial viability of this technology in the long term and explore additional business opportunities."
