South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. is reviewing options to sell a stake in its semiconductor packaging and testing facility located in Chongqing, China, according to industry sources and foreign media reports. The potential transaction, which remains in its early stages, could value the facility at approximately $3 billion (around 4 trillion Korean won).
Reports citing sources familiar with the matter indicate that SK Hynix is currently holding preliminary discussions with financial advisors to evaluate various strategic alternatives for the Chongqing site. Potential suitors considering acquiring a stake in the facility reportedly include Chinese investment funds and local semiconductor companies. Under the potential scenarios under consideration, SK Hynix may execute a full sale or choose to retain a minority stake in the plant.
However, sources emphasized that discussions are still preliminary and may not necessarily lead to a finalized transaction. SK Hynix declined to officially confirm the details regarding the report.
Operational since July 2014, the Chongqing facility serves as SK Hynix’s primary backend manufacturing hub in China, specializing in the assembly, packaging, and testing of NAND flash memory chips. Industry observers suggest that any potential decision to re-evaluate the plant's operational structure aligns with broader supply chain diversification efforts and strategic capital reallocation within the global semiconductor sector.
