Gwangju, South Korea – Gwangju City recently celebrated the grand opening of its new bike path connecting Gwangju Station to the Taejeon District. This project aims to improve safety and convenience for the growing number of cyclists in the area, particularly following large-scale urban development around Gwangju Station.

The project was implemented in two phases. The first phase, completed in June 2022, connected Gwangju Station to Daman 2 Bridge, spanning 1.44 kilometers. The second phase, now finished, extends the path from the Gwangnam 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center to a bridge crossing the Jungdae Stream, adding another 0.84 kilometers.

The completed bike path is now 2.28 kilometers long and 35 meters wide, constructed at a total cost of 6.3 billion won. It offers a direct and safe route for residents of Taejeon District to reach Gwangju Station, promoting the use of bicycles and personal mobility devices (PMs) as eco-friendly transportation options. The city anticipates that this will alleviate traffic congestion and contribute to a greener urban environment.

"We appreciate the patience of our community during the construction period," said Mayor Bang Se-hwan. "We are committed to expanding our road and transportation infrastructure, including bike paths, to minimize inconvenience for our citizens."

Gwangju City has also completed projects connecting the bike path from Gwangju Station to Gwangnam High School and the construction of a bike parking facility at Gwangju Station. The city plans to continue improving its bike infrastructure by addressing gaps in the network and revising its bicycle utilization plan.

This new bike path is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for Gwangju residents by providing a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation alternative.
