KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia's robust halal certification system is facing intense public and regulatory examination following a major enforcement raid on a poultry processing facility in Puchong.
The investigation was triggered when enforcement officers uncovered severe sanitary violations and alleged protocol breaches during a surprise inspection last week, resulting in the confiscation of over 6.5 metric tonnes of poultry products.
According to officials, the contested facility operates on a massive scale, handling upward of 40,000 chickens every single day and distributing meat to numerous commercial clients throughout the Klang Valley region. However, investigators revealed that the plant had been functioning without proper certification and allegedly bypassed core Islamic slaughter regulations by stunning the animals with electric shocks prior to processing.
The incident has ignited widespread calls for accountability, with consumer advocates demanding answers as to how the uncertified operation managed to evade detection and warning systems for an extended period.
