Amidst a spate of wildfires across the nation, particularly in the Yeongnam region, South Chungcheong Province Governor Kim Tae-heum has directed a full-scale operation for wildfire monitoring and response.

During a senior staff meeting held on March 24th at the provincial government office, Governor Kim expressed serious concern over the escalating wildfire situation. "Significant fires have broken out in the Yeongnam region, including Sancheong in South Gyeongsang and Uiseong in North Gyeongsang, and are still being extinguished. Wildfires are also occurring in various parts of our province," he stated. He further emphasized the heightened risk due to dry spring weather conditions coupled with strong winds, which could easily cause small sparks to develop into large-scale blazes.

Governor Kim stressed the critical importance of proactive prevention, stating, "Wildfires are directly linked to the lives and property of our citizens. We must prioritize thorough prevention measures." He specifically instructed officials to intensify guidance and crackdowns targeting hikers and local residents, particularly during periods known for increased wildfire risk, such as around the Hansik and Arbor Day observances and the wild vegetable harvesting season.

Regarding response measures, Governor Kim underscored the need for decisive action. "Upon the outbreak of a wildfire, we must deploy helicopters intensively for initial suppression efforts. Adjacent cities and counties should also disregard administrative boundaries and provide all available resources and personnel to contain the spread of the fire," he asserted.

The South Chungcheong Provincial Government is currently operating wildfire prevention and control headquarters in 216 organizations across the province to bolster its preparedness.

In an effort to prevent fires caused by the burning of agricultural waste, the province is utilizing wildfire prevention personnel to shred abandoned agricultural byproducts across 284 hectares of farmland. They are also focusing on strict enforcement against unauthorized burning of agricultural byproducts and field margins adjacent to forests.

To enhance early detection and rapid initial response, the province has strategically deployed five leased wildfire suppression helicopters to five key cities and counties: Hongseong, Nonsan, Cheonan, Boryeong, and Seosan.

These leased helicopters are conducting surveillance flights during high-risk wildfire periods. Furthermore, a collaborative system involving 24 helicopters from the Korea Forest Service and military units stationed throughout the province is in place to ensure immediate deployment upon theReport of a wildfire.

In addition to the aerial resources, the province has deployed 1,605 wildfire personnel, including wildfire watchers and suppression team members. Ground resources include 209 fire trucks and 83 power pumps. A network of 127 surveillance cameras is also in continuous operation to maintain constant vigilance.

Governor Kim's strong directives highlight the province's commitment to safeguarding its citizens and natural resources from the devastating impact of wildfires during this high-risk season.
