SINGAPORE — In a strategic move to redefine South Korea’s sports and cultural infrastructure, Governor Kim Tae-heum of Chungcheongnam-do (Chungnam) visited the world-renowned Singapore Sports Hub on March 5, 2026. This visit serves as a critical stepping stone for the province's ambitious plan to construct the "Cheonan-Asan Multipurpose Dome Stadium."
Currently on an overseas mission to attract foreign investment and explore new markets, Governor Kim’s primary objective was to observe the operational nuances of the Singapore Sports Hub—a facility widely considered the global gold standard for integrated sports and entertainment complexes.
A Global Model for Multifunctional Excellence
The Singapore Sports Hub, spanning a massive 42-hectare site, is anchored by the Singapore National Stadium. This marvel of engineering features:
The World’s Largest Retractable Roof: Measuring 310 meters in diameter, the roof can open or close in just 23 minutes.
-Massive Capacity: A standard 55,000-seat layout that can expand to 60,000 seats for major events.
-Climate Control: Tailored for tropical heat, the stadium utilizes an innovative cooling system that maintains a consistent temperature of 23°C at the spectator level.
The hub is not merely a venue for sports like soccer, rugby, and athletics; it has evolved into a global cultural epicenter. It has hosted legendary acts such as BTS, BLACKPINK, Taylor Swift, and Coldplay. Notably, the K-pop sensation SEVENTEEN is scheduled to take the stage there on March 7 as part of their world tour.
Detailed Benchmarking for the Cheonan-Asan Project
During his tour, Governor Kim engaged in high-level discussions with Daryl Yeo, Deputy CEO of Sport Singapore, and Quek Swee Kuan, CEO of Kallang Alive Sport Management. The Governor’s inquiries were exhaustive, focusing on the practical "blueprints" of success, including:
-Revenue Models: Analyzing profit-sharing structures and commercial facility yields.
-Operational Efficiency: The time required to transition the stadium between different sports and concert configurations.
-Logistics and Maintenance: Parking facility management and the annual operational costs of the specialized cooling systems.
"The Singapore Sports Hub is more than just a sports complex; it is a 'living platform' that injects vitality into the entire city," Governor Kim remarked. "I am deeply impressed by how it integrates commerce, tourism, and culture."
The Vision for 2031: A New Landmark in Chungnam
Chungnam Province aims to replicate and adapt this success for the Cheonan-Asan Multipurpose Dome Stadium, slated for completion by 2031. The proposed project includes:
-Scale: A 50,000-seat stadium situated on a 25-hectare site.
-Versatility: Designed to host professional baseball, soccer, international sporting events, and year-round K-pop performances.
-Economic Synergy: The dome will be linked with a nearby Regional Integrated Transit Center, creating a hub for commerce and tourism.
Governor Kim emphasized that the project is a "growth engine" intended to elevate the city's status and improve the quality of life for its residents. By fostering a mutual cooperative relationship with Singaporean officials, Chungnam plans to ensure that the Cheonan-Asan Dome becomes a world-class landmark that revitalizes the local economy.
