ANDONG — Gyeongsangbuk-do recently took a major step toward fostering an inclusive community by hosting the "Barrier-Free Nak Festival" at the Andong Mask Dance Park.
Organized by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Welfare Center for Persons with Disabilities, the event was built around the core theme of eliminating everyday obstacles for marginalized groups, including individuals with disabilities, senior citizens, and expectant mothers. By gathering approximately 41 regional organizations and civic groups, the festival aimed to bridge the gap between disabled and non-disabled residents through shared experiences and cultural activities.
The vibrant day-long gathering featured a wide array of interactive zones. Attendees explored assistive technology exhibits, purchased handmade goods crafted by workers with disabilities, and participated in empathy-building simulation booths managed directly by disabled individuals.
Festivities commenced with dynamic traditional Korean percussion performances and a collaborative opening ceremony, setting an upbeat tone for the day. The afternoon program offered diverse entertainment and educational activities, including an open-mic song contest, guest musical performances, team recreation games, and a youth drawing competition focused on disability awareness.
A notable highlight was the "Sangsang Nurimteo" zone, which integrated cutting-edge technology into the event. Visitors of all abilities immersed themselves in virtual reality (VR) adventures, engaged in creative craft workshops, and captured memories at a popular photo booth. Additional engagement came via a park-wide stamp tour and a lucky-draw raffle.
Provincial officials emphasized that the gathering serves as a cornerstone for long-term regional policy. "This festival reflects Gyeongbuk’s proactive commitment to embedding a barrier-free mindset into our local culture," said Kim Geun-woo, head of the province's Disability Welfare Division. "We remain dedicated to implementing thoughtful, continuous policies to ensure every resident grows and thrives side-by-side, free of discrimination."
