Andong International Convention Center hosts diverse cultural programs bridging history, AI, and youth engagement.

ANDONG — Gyeongsangbuk-do successfully wrapped up its three-day commemorative expo on November 6, marking the 100th anniversary of the June 10 Independence Movement. Held at the Andong International Convention Center, the event drew local residents, scholars, and youths to celebrate one of Korea’s monumental historical milestones.

The June 10 Independence Movement stands alongside the March 1st Movement and the Gwangju Student Independence Movement as one of the three major domestic uprisings against Japanese colonial rule. Operating under the banner "The Cry of 1926, the Companion of 2026: Opening the Future," the expo was designed to bring the historic fight for sovereignty into the everyday consciousness of modern generations.

The festival kicked off on November 4 with dynamic pre-performances, an AI-generated independence film, a youth video contest, and a keynote address by Kookmin University Professor Emeritus Jang Seok-heung. A highlight of the academic schedule was an international forum convening scholars from South Korea, Vietnam, and India to analyze the movement's place within the broader global anti-imperialist solidarity of the 1920s.

The subsequent days featured prominent public figures, including star history lecturer Choi Tae-sung and KAIST AI researcher Heo Seong-beom, who led youth-oriented discussions on artificial intelligence, career development, and historical legacy. Film enthusiasts also gathered for a special screening of director Woo Min-ho’s acclaimed movie Harbin, followed by an in-depth conversation featuring the director and film critic Lee Da-hye.

Interactive elements anchored the event, with 100 students competing in historical trivia challenges and visitors exploring special archives, organization booths, and a venue-wide stamp tour.

Reflecting on the successful conclusion of the centennial event, Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo emphasized Andong's profound historical significance as a cradle of national independence. He expressed hope that the expo served as more than a retrospective glance into the past, helping citizens and young people actively carry forward the spirit of patriotism in their daily lives.
