Prayagraj, India – A stampede at the Kumbh Mela, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, has resulted in the deaths of at least dozens of people. The tragic incident occurred on January 29th in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage festival, draws millions of devotees every 12 years. Pilgrims believe that bathing in the holy rivers at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers can cleanse their sins and lead to salvation. This year, the festival commenced on January 13th and is scheduled to conclude on March 26th.

According to multiple news agencies, the stampede occurred in the early hours of the morning when a massive crowd surged forward, overwhelming safety barriers. Witnesses reported that the panic ensued after people tried to jump over barricades, leading to a chaotic and deadly crush.

Local authorities have stated that the death toll is still being confirmed, but estimates from various news outlets range from 17 to 39. Dozens more were injured in the incident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling the incident "deeply saddening." Despite the deployment of thousands of security personnel and surveillance cameras, the tragedy highlights the challenges of managing such large-scale religious gatherings.

The Kumbh Mela has been marred by similar incidents in the past, underscoring the need for stricter safety measures and crowd control. As investigations into the latest stampede continue, questions are being raised about the adequacy of the safety protocols in place.
