SAN FRANCISCO – Genesis, the luxury automotive brand under Hyundai Motor Group, officially unveiled its first full-size flagship electric SUV, the GV90, at a grand world premiere held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on August 19, 2026. This launch marks a pivotal moment for Genesis as it steps into its "next decade," aiming to challenge established global luxury leaders like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Cadillac with a uniquely Korean vision of prestige.
The Genesis Vision: "Future Luxury" Defined by Human Experience
Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, emphasized that the GV90 is more than just a vehicle; it is a manifestation of the brand's philosophy on the future of luxury. "The GV90 represents the direction of future luxury as envisioned by Genesis," Chung stated. "Innovation here is not about technology for its own sake, but about enhancing the human experience and providing our customers with greater freedom."
The GV90 serves as a production realization of the "NEOLUN" concept car introduced in 2024. By moving away from merely emulating traditional European luxury, Genesis has carved out a distinct identity rooted in Korean culture, specifically emphasizing the values of "hospitality" (the Korean concept of hwan-dae) and bespoke craftsmanship.
A Fusion of Korean Tradition and Cutting-Edge Engineering
The exterior design of the GV90 draws inspiration from the understated elegance of Korean moon jar pottery, utilizing soft curves and clean surfaces to exude a commanding yet graceful presence. Inside, the vehicle is reimagined as a curated living space. The "GV90 Neolun Executive Suite," a top-tier four-seat configuration, features a real wood veneer floor inspired by the traditional Korean ondol (underfloor heating) method. This system utilizes radiant heat warmers integrated into armrests, door trims, and floor panels to provide natural, uniform warmth without relying solely on climate control.
Innovation in convenience is highlighted by the "Neolun Arch Gate." This system introduces the world’s first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach doors, which allow for an exceptionally wide and unobstructed entry. To further enhance the lounge-like experience, the GV90 features motorized swiveling front seats that can rotate 180 degrees, enabling passengers to face each other during stationary periods.
Technological Prowess: A True "Tech Showcase"
Built on the dedicated flagship "eMP" EV platform, the GV90 is packed with high-end technology. It boasts a 123.5 kWh battery—the largest in the Hyundai Motor Group’s electric lineup—delivering a projected driving range of 500 kilometers (approximately 311 miles) based on internal testing. The dual-motor system produces a combined output of 490 kW (657 horsepower) and 800 Nm of torque, ensuring performance befitting a flagship model.
Safety remains a cornerstone of the GV90’s engineering. Beyond a robust aluminum frame designed for increased rigidity, the vehicle includes a 12-airbag system, headlined by the world’s first "Roof Airbag," which deploys across the glass roof in the event of a rollover to protect occupants. Furthermore, the car features the "Pleos Connect" infotainment platform and the "Gleo AI" agent, positioning the GV90 as a technological showcase for the group’s most advanced digital capabilities.
Beyond the First Decade: A New Era
Since its inception as an independent brand in 2015, Genesis has successfully built a comprehensive lineup of sedans and SUVs. As Genesis enters its second decade, the GV90 acts as the ultimate test of its ability to move beyond mere product expansion. By focusing on a distinct brand identity—one that harmonizes advanced EV technology with a deeply rooted philosophy of warmth and hospitality—Genesis aims to capture the hearts of global luxury consumers who seek experiences that transcend traditional automotive benchmarks. With the GV90, the brand is ready to rewrite the rules of what it means to travel in true, modern luxury.
