Fencing Star Oh Sang-uk Dominates National Sports Festival, Secures Double Gold

Korean men's saber fencing ace, Oh Sang-uk (Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall), has reaffirmed his status by achieving a double-gold sweep at the 106th National Sports Festival.

After clinching the individual gold medal on the 25th, Oh led the Daejeon delegation to victory in the Men's General Division Team Saber event held on the 30th at the Geumjeong Gymnasium in Busan Spoone Park.

The Daejeon team, featuring Oh Sang-uk alongside Park Sang-uk, Lim Jae-yun (both Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall), and Yoo Tae-min (Daejeon University), defeated the Seoul representatives with a convincing 45-31 score in the final. The Seoul team included veterans like Kim Jung-hwan and Kim Byung-soo.

This victory is particularly significant as it marks Oh’s successful return to competitive form. After achieving a historic double-gold (individual gold and team bronze) at the Paris Olympics last year, Oh had taken a temporary leave from the national team for rest and recuperation. Now recharged, he has resumed his career, set to rejoin the national squad for the upcoming 2026-2027 season.

The fencing events at this year's National Sports Festival were held as pre-games from the 25th to the 30th, preceding the main competition period scheduled for October 17-23. Oh Sang-uk’s performance is a strong indicator of his readiness to compete again on the international stage.
