Lotte Town Myeongdong Lights Up with 'Welcome Light' to Greet Global K-Pop Fans

SEOUL — The heart of Seoul’s shopping district is glowing in shades of purple this week. Lotte Department Store announced on Thursday that it will host a spectacular lighting display titled "Welcome Light" at its Myeongdong headquarters to celebrate and welcome the influx of global K-pop fans visiting South Korea.

According to Lotte Department Store, the event will run for four days, from March 19 to March 22. Every evening between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM, the facades of the Main Store (Main and New Wings) and the luxury hall, Avenuel, will be transformed into a canvas of light. To accommodate the expected weekend crowds, the display will be extended until 11:00 PM on Saturday, March 21.

A Symphony of Purple and Laser Beams
The "Welcome Light" display features a deep purple ambient glow—a color often associated with the global K-pop fandom—interspersed with rhythmic red and white laser beams. This choreography of light is designed to create a sophisticated and festive atmosphere, turning the Myeongdong "Lotte Town" area into a must-visit nightscape destination for both international tourists and local residents.

"We curated this lighting event to offer a special night view experience in the middle of the city for global fans who have traveled far to experience K-culture," a Lotte Department Store representative stated. "We hope this adds a unique charm to the nighttime ambiance of the Myeongdong district."

Boosting the "K-Wave" Shopping Experience
The lighting ceremony is only one part of a broader initiative to capture the hearts (and wallets) of international visitors. Accompanying the visual spectacle is the 'K-Wave Shopping Week,' which will run from March 19 through March 29.

This promotional event is centered around Lotte’s key locations frequented by tourists, including the Myeongdong Main Store, the Jamsil branch (near Lotte World Tower), and the Lotte Outlets at Seoul Station. During this period, the retailer will offer specialized services and benefits tailored to foreign shoppers, further cementing its status as a premier shopping landmark.

Curated Gifts and Cultural Integration
For those looking to take a piece of Korea back home, Lotte has also launched a 'K-Gift Curation Space' on the B1 floor of the Main Store's food hall. This dedicated zone features a selection of representative Korean gift items, categorized for easy browsing. From traditional snacks and premium teas to trendy lifestyle goods, the curation aims to simplify the shopping experience for tourists seeking authentic souvenirs.

The timing of these events aligns with a broader trend of "retailtainment," where department stores are no longer just places to buy goods but are evolving into cultural hubs. By integrating K-pop aesthetics with high-end retail services, Lotte is positioning itself at the forefront of the 2026 tourism boom.

As the purple lasers dance across the Seoul sky tonight, it’s clear that Myeongdong is ready to embrace the world. Whether you are a die-hard K-pop fan or a casual traveler, Lotte Town’s "Welcome Light" offers a bright invitation to experience the vibrant energy of modern Korea.
