"Peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Role of Overseas Koreans" – A Forum for In-depth Discussion to Open

The '80th Anniversary of Liberation Overseas Koreans' Unification Policy Seminar: "Peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Role of Overseas Koreans"' is scheduled to be held with great success on Monday, August 25th, from 10 AM to 12 PM, in the 2nd Small Conference Room of the National Assembly Members' Office Building. This seminar will also be conducted simultaneously via the online video conferencing platform Zoom, offering an opportunity for wider participation and communication.

The seminar is co-hosted by National Assembly members Kim Young-bae, Lee Jae-gang, and Lee Ki-hyun, along with AOK Korea and Peace (a non-profit corporation). It is co-organized by the Seoul National University Institute for Peace and Unification Studies, the Kim Dae-jung Foundation Overseas Koreans Committee, the National Association of Korean Americans, and the Korean American Hope Alliance. Supported by World Korean and the Inter-Korean Peace Conference, this event is highly anticipated to foster in-depth discussions on establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula and the role of overseas Koreans, especially significant as it commemorates the 80th anniversary of liberation.

Notably, the seminar will feature important presentations regarding related legal revisions. The first presentation will be delivered by Kim Beom-soo, Director of the Seoul National University Institute for Peace and Unification Studies, on the topic of 'Peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Role of Overseas Koreans.' Director Kim is expected to provide insights into what roles overseas Koreans can play in the Korean Peninsula peace process and how their capabilities can be effectively utilized.

The second presentation will be given by Roh Chang-hyun, President of the Association of Overseas Korean Journalists, on the topic of 'North Korea's Law on Protecting the Rights and Interests of Overseas Koreans and South Korea's Framework Act on Overseas Koreans.' President Roh will compare and analyze the laws related to overseas Koreans in both North and South Korea, and explore legal and institutional improvements for protecting their rights and interests and providing practical support. This is expected to offer crucial implications for future policy-making concerning overseas Koreans.

This seminar will be an important occasion to confirm the aspirations of the overseas Korean community for peace on the Korean Peninsula and to discuss their active participation and role. Furthermore, through in-depth exchanges of expert opinions on related legal revisions, it is expected to contribute to setting the direction for overseas Korean policies.
