A Chinese 'Spider Woman' Scales Sheer Cliffs Barehanded

Guizhou, China – A 43-year-old Chinese woman named Luo Dengpin has captured the world’s attention for her extraordinary ability to scale sheer cliffs with nothing but her bare hands. Hailing from the Miao minority group in southwestern China’s Guizhou Province, Dengpin has been dubbed the “Chinese Spider Woman” for her daring feats.

Dengpin’s remarkable climbing skills are deeply rooted in the Miao people’s traditional burial customs. The Miao have a long-standing tradition of burying their deceased on high cliffs. It was at the age of 15 that Dengpin began her rock-climbing journey under the guidance of her father.

In the past, she would spend hours climbing cliffs to collect medicinal herbs and bird droppings for fertilizer, tasks that required not only physical strength but also incredible precision. Although she no longer needs to engage in these activities for subsistence, Dengpin continues to climb for the sake of preserving her cultural heritage and to provide for her family.

Dengpin’s unique skill has made her a local celebrity, with tourists paying to witness her daring climbs. As the sole female practitioner of this ancient tradition, Dengpin takes great pride in keeping the tradition alive.

Her story is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Miao people, as well as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
