Shigatse, Tibet – A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Shigatse, Tibet, on July 7th, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The tremor, which was centered near Dingri County, was felt as far away as Nepal and India.   

At least 53 people were killed and over 62 injured in the quake, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, and the region's infrastructure suffered significant damage. The quake triggered numerous aftershocks, including several measuring over magnitude 3.0.   

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an immediate response to the disaster, directing officials to prioritize search and rescue operations and provide urgent aid to the affected communities. Vice Premier Zhang Guocheng was dispatched to the region to oversee relief efforts.   

"We must spare no effort to minimize casualties, strengthen earthquake monitoring and early warning systems, and ensure that the people have a safe and warm winter," Xi said in a statement.

The quake struck a remote and mountainous region of Tibet, home to a population of around 6,900 people within a 20-kilometer radius of the epicenter. The area is known for its rugged terrain and harsh climate, which could complicate rescue and recovery efforts.   

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported a magnitude of 7.1 for the earthquake, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated it at 7.0. However, China's official seismological agency placed the magnitude at 6.8.

The earthquake has once again highlighted the seismic risks faced by regions along the Himalayan mountain range, one of the most geologically active areas in the world.
