Nearly thirty years after it was last sold to private collectors, the legendary black silk "revenge dress" worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, is returning to the auction block. Sotheby's has announced that the iconic garment will be featured in a historic standalone fashion evening auction in New York on December 9, 2026. Auction experts estimate the dress will fetch between $150,000 and $300,000, though its immense cultural significance could drive bids even higher. Before heading to New York, the dress will be exhibited globally, starting with a public display in London from September 18 to 24, followed by stops in Hong Kong and Geneva. 

The gown earned its famous moniker from the dramatic events of June 29, 1994. On that evening, Princess Diana attended a Vanity Fair gala dinner hosted at London's Serpentine Gallery. She arrived in a daring, form-fitting black silk gown designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline, an asymmetrical hemline, and a side-swept train. She accessorized the outfit with a striking sapphire-and-pearl choker necklace, black heels, and bold red nail polish. 

The timing of her appearance transformed the outfit into a historic cultural artifact. Just hours before the event, her estranged husband, then-Prince Charles (now King Charles III), publicly admitted to his long-standing infidelity with Camilla Parker Bowles in a nationally televised documentary. Breaking away from traditional royal protocols—which typically restricted wearing black to mourning periods—Diana projected an image of absolute confidence, poise, and independence. Her choice of attire successfully shifted the public narrative, allowing her to take control of her own story during a deeply vulnerable moment. 

Originally, the dress had been sitting in Diana's wardrobe for three years because she initially considered it too risqué. However, on the night of the gala, it became a powerful symbol of self-expression. The dress was last put up for public sale in June 1997, when the princess auctioned off 79 of her iconic dresses to raise funds for breast cancer and AIDS charities, just two months before her tragic death in Paris. It was purchased at the time by Scottish couple Grahame and Briege Mackenzie. After keeping it carefully preserved for nearly three decades, Briege Mackenzie has decided to part with the historic garment, with a portion of the auction proceeds designated for the NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
