Halal Investments Under Scrutiny: How HSBC’s Sharia-Compliant Fund Flowed Millions into Israel-Linked Military Firms

LONDON — A growing controversy surrounds major Islamic financial products after recent analyses revealed that HSBC’s flagship "sharia-compliant" fund channeled over $100 million into major technology and defense companies tied to Israel’s military. The revelation has triggered intense debate among Muslim investors and financial analysts regarding the transparency and integrity of ethical screening processes.

Key Findings of the Investigation

According to detailed reports by media outlets such as Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera, the HSBC Islamic Global Equity Index Fund—managing over $8 billion in assets—purchased shares in at least five prominent international firms linked directly or indirectly to military operations in the Middle East during the first half of the year.

Among the primary companies identified in the fund's portfolio are:

-Palantir Technologies: A U.S. data analytics and artificial intelligence firm that has provided software infrastructure and targeting technology to Israel’s Ministry of Defence.
-RTX Corporation (Raytheon): A massive aerospace and defense contractor that partners with Israeli firms to build components for missile defense systems like the Iron Dome.
-Analog Devices, Honeywell International, and Rolls-Royce Holdings: Conglomerates and semiconductor suppliers whose components have been traced to military hardware and precision-guided munitions utilized in ongoing conflicts.

Implications for Muslim Savings and Pensions

Sharia-compliant (or halal) funds are explicitly designed to align with Islamic law, which strictly prohibits investments in unethical sectors such as weapons manufacturing, gambling, alcohol, and companies contributing to human rights abuses or oppression.

The discovery that retirement savings and investments intended to be ethically cleansed under Islamic principles have ended up in companies supporting military supply chains has left many Muslim investors deeply concerned. Critics note that this disconnect highlights systemic loopholes in how traditional financial institutions vet global equities for Islamic compliance, prompting calls for stricter oversight, greater transparency, and an overhaul of legacy screening criteria.

As Al Jazeera’s Lina-Serene and other investigative journalists continue to spotlight these financial pipelines, pressure is mounting on global banking institutions to re-evaluate where everyday Muslim savings are ultimately directed.
