
TAIPEI, Taiwan — In a major leap forward for the integration of physical artificial intelligence (AI) in advanced manufacturing, SK Telecom (SKT) announced a groundbreaking collaboration with NVIDIA to implement digital twin technology at SK Hynix’s semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs). The milestone achievement was spotlighted during a keynote address at NVIDIA’s prestigious "GTC Taipei" conference in Taiwan on Monday, positioning SKT as a premier partner in the global industrial AI ecosystem.
A digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical factory or equipment that allows manufacturers to simulate operations, test configuration changes, and evaluate layout efficiency in a risk-free virtual environment. By enabling companies to run diverse operational scenarios before physical implementation, the technology minimizes costly trial-and-error, optimizes resource allocation, and empowers data-driven decision-making. Today, it stands as a cornerstone technology for the next generation of smart manufacturing.
Driving Toward the 'Autonomous Fab 2030'
This collaborative breakthrough aligns with SK Hynix’s ambitious vision to establish an "Autonomous Fab 2030." Last year, SKT and SK Hynix successfully completed a Proof of Concept (PoC) applying digital twin technology to a live semiconductor manufacturing environment. Following this successful validation, the companies plan to commercialize and scale the system in structured phases across their production lines.
Semiconductor fabs are notoriously complex, housing thousands of highly sensitive, interconnected machines operating under strict cleanroom conditions. Replicating this environment digitally requires managing unprecedented amounts of spatial and operational data. To overcome this challenge, SKT developed its proprietary "Agentic Digital Twin Modeling" technology by leveraging NVIDIA’s advanced agent toolkit.
This innovative modeling technology automates and intelligentizes the processing of vast, fragmented manufacturing data, including equipment specifications and complex spatial layouts. By streamlining data conversion, scene optimization, and system performance enhancements, SKT has drastically reduced the time and labor required to construct and maintain massive industrial digital twins.
Optimizing the Virtual Factory
Furthermore, SKT is upgrading its core platform by integrating the NVIDIA Omniverse library—a computing platform that enables individuals and teams to develop 3D workflows and applications. This integration has yielded significant performance benchmarks, drastically accelerating 3D scene loading speeds, enhancing execution rendering, and optimizing Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) and memory efficiency. The result is a highly stable, scalable digital twin infrastructure capable of seamlessly handling the massive, high-density data generated by modern semiconductor facilities.
Industry leaders have taken note of the technical sophistication required for this project. Mike Geyer, Global Head of Industrial Digital Twin at NVIDIA, praised the collaboration's success, noting the extreme difficulty of the undertaking.
"Semiconductor fabs represent one of the most demanding manufacturing environments in the world, combining massive 3D datasets, intricate equipment structures, and a relentless need for high-level optimization," Geyer stated. "SKT has demonstrated an exceptional level of technical capability by successfully applying and validating NVIDIA’s Omniverse Agent Toolkit within a real-world industrial setting."
Expanding the Footprint of Physical AI
As the global manufacturing sector increasingly pivots toward automation, the synergy between SKT's telecommunications and AI modeling expertise and NVIDIA's world-class graphics and AI computing power is expected to set a new industry standard.
Cho Ik-hwan, Vice President and Head of Physical AI at SKT, expressed strong optimism for the future of this partnership. "Going forward, we will continue to expand our role as a strategic physical AI technology partner alongside NVIDIA, not only in semiconductors but across a diverse range of manufacturing industries," Cho said.
With the successful showcase at GTC Taipei, the alliance between SKT and NVIDIA signals a transformative shift in how advanced hardware is manufactured, paving the way for fully autonomous, self-optimizing industrial ecosystems by the end of the decade.
