Vientiane, Laos – The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) announced a USD 13 million grant on December 19th to improve road safety and upgrade six bridges along National Road No. 8 in Laos. This vital road connects Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, forming a crucial segment of the Asian Highway 15.
The project aims to address safety concerns and modernize the road infrastructure, which was originally constructed in the 1980s. Key components include bridge upgrades, including improvements at two accident-prone locations, installation of safety equipment, public awareness campaigns, equipment provision, and capacity-building training programs for local authorities.
Korean Ambassador Jung Yung Soo emphasized the significance of this project as a symbol of strong Laos-Korea cooperation. He also announced plans to elevate the bilateral relationship to a "Comprehensive Partnership" in 2025, marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
This initiative is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and contribute to economic development in Laos by improving transportation efficiency and safety along this vital trade route.
