Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Aramco, a global leader in the energy industry, has significantly enhanced the efficiency of its power network at the Shaybah field by implementing COPA-DATA’s zenon software platform. This strategic move has resulted in a more reliable and optimized power supply for the vast oil and gas operations in the region.

Located in the southeastern part of Saudi Arabia, the Shaybah field is a remote and challenging environment. To ensure uninterrupted operations in such a demanding setting, Saudi Aramco required a robust and scalable power management system. The company partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to design and implement a comprehensive solution that leverages the capabilities of COPA-DATA's zenon software.

A Unified Approach to Power Management

The heart of the project lies in the integration of a Power Management System (PMS) and Power System Automation (PSA) system, both powered by zenon. By utilizing zenon's flexible and scalable architecture, SEL was able to create a centralized control system that effectively manages the complex power network across the Shaybah field. This includes various facilities such as gas and oil separation plants (GOSP) and natural gas liquefaction (NGL) plants, which are spread over a vast geographical area.

Key Benefits of the zenon Implementation

Real-time Monitoring and Control: zenon provides real-time visibility into the entire power system, enabling operators to detect anomalies and take corrective actions promptly.
Enhanced Reliability: The system's redundancy and fault tolerance features ensure uninterrupted power supply even in the event of unexpected disruptions.
Improved Efficiency: By optimizing power generation and distribution, zenon helps to reduce energy consumption and lower operational costs.
Scalability: The system can easily accommodate future expansions and changes in the power network.
Seamless Integration: zenon's ability to integrate with various hardware and software systems facilitated a smooth integration with existing infrastructure.

A Successful Partnership

Ali Safwan, Manager at SEL, commented on the success of the project, stating, "zenon has been instrumental in enabling seamless integration and centralized control of diverse systems. The solution has proven to be more efficient than traditional distributed control systems (DCS)."

A Benchmark for the Industry

The successful implementation of zenon at the Shaybah field sets a new benchmark for power management in the oil and gas industry. By demonstrating the power of a unified and automated approach, Saudi Aramco and its partners have shown how advanced software solutions can optimize operations and enhance reliability in even the most challenging environments.

About Saudi Aramco

Saudi Aramco is a global integrated energy and chemicals company, responsible for developing and exploiting the world’s largest crude oil reserves. As the world’s largest oil exporter, the company plays a pivotal role in shaping the global energy landscape.
