Gyeongju, South Korea – Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has officially partnered with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gyeongju City to ensure the successful hosting of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. The collaboration, formalized through a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), outlines KHNP's significant contributions, including the establishment of an XR (eXtended Reality) Mobility Bus and the provision of accommodation at its Dongcheon staff complex for summit support personnel.

The signing ceremony took place on June 16th at KHNP headquarters, bringing together key representatives from all three entities. This strategic alliance underscores a concerted effort to leverage the APEC Summit as a catalyst for regional development and a global showcase for South Korea's advanced technological capabilities and rich cultural heritage.

Under the terms of the agreement, KHNP has pledged 500 million won (approximately $360,000 USD) towards the development and deployment of the state-of-the-art XR Mobility Bus. This innovative vehicle is designed to be a mobile exhibition space, seamlessly integrating cutting-edge energy technology with captivating cultural and tourism content. During the summit, the XR Mobility Bus will offer a unique and immersive experience for visiting heads of state, delegates, and international media. It aims to not only highlight Gyeongju's profound historical and cultural legacy, often referred to as "the museum without walls" due to its numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites from the Silla Kingdom, but also to vividly demonstrate South Korea's prowess in digital technology and its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Furthermore, KHNP will provide approximately 200 units within its newly constructed Dongcheon staff complex as lodging for essential support personnel, including police and firefighting forces. This housing initiative, set to be completed in October, will ensure comfortable and convenient accommodations for the significant number of individuals crucial to the summit's logistical success and security. This provision alleviates a substantial logistical burden for the city and province, allowing them to focus resources on other critical aspects of summit preparation.

The decision to hold the APEC Summit in Gyeongju, a city steeped in history and culture, marks a significant moment for both the region and the nation. APEC, a forum of 21 Pacific Rim member economies, aims to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Hosting such a prestigious international event offers an unparalleled opportunity for Gyeongju to enhance its global profile as a premier tourist destination and a vibrant hub for cultural exchange. For South Korea as a whole, it provides a platform to solidify its position as a leading nation in technological innovation, economic diplomacy, and cultural influence.

Hwang Joo-ho, President and CEO of KHNP, emphasized the company's commitment during the signing ceremony. "As the APEC Summit, which the world is watching, will be held in Gyeongju, we will take responsibility as a representative local public enterprise and actively support it," Hwang stated. His remarks underscore KHNP's recognition of its role as a key corporate citizen in the region and its dedication to contributing to major national events. As a state-owned enterprise responsible for nuclear power generation and a significant employer in the Gyeongju area, KHNP's involvement goes beyond mere financial sponsorship; it represents a comprehensive commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the local community.

The Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government and Gyeongju City have been diligently preparing for the summit, anticipating a significant influx of international visitors and media attention. The support from KHNP is expected to substantially bolster these preparations, ensuring a smooth and impactful event. The APEC Summit is not just a diplomatic gathering; it's an opportunity for economic stimulation, cultural exchange, and the fostering of international goodwill. Local businesses, especially those in the hospitality, tourism, and retail sectors, are preparing for a boost in activity. The summit is also expected to draw attention to Gyeongju's unique blend of ancient heritage and modern amenities, potentially leading to increased tourism and investment in the long term.

Beyond the immediate logistical support, the collaboration highlights a broader trend of public-private partnerships in South Korea aimed at advancing national interests. By combining governmental foresight with corporate resources and expertise, such collaborations can achieve outcomes that would be challenging for any single entity to accomplish alone. The APEC 2025 Summit in Gyeongju is poised to be a testament to this collaborative spirit, showcasing South Korea's organizational capabilities and its unique cultural identity on a global stage. The successful execution of this summit will undoubtedly leave a lasting positive impression, benefiting Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and the entire nation.
