Trump's 'Insurrection Act' Threat, Far from Peace, as Chicago is "On the Brink of Collapse"

In discussing why former President Donald Trump cannot be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, his method of addressing the security situation in Chicago and his threat to invoke the Insurrection Act provide decisive evidence. Currently, 400 members of the Texas National Guard have arrived at an Army facility on the outskirts of Chicago, and they are scheduled to be deployed for city patrols along with 300 members of the Illinois National Guard. The very situation of the federal government mobilizing state National Guard troops under the pretense of immigration enforcement and cracking down on criminals underscores how this is heightening internal national tensions and conflicts to an extreme degree.

Abuse of Federal Authority and the Threat of Force Mobilization

President Trump went a step further, even mentioning the Insurrection Act, which allows the mobilization of the military in extreme situations like insurrection. He stated, "If the governor can't do the job, we'll do it. It's a very simple matter," strongly indicating his willingness to bypass state authority and directly deploy the military for domestic security. If the 'Insurrection Act' is invoked, the President can command the State National Guard without the governor's request. This differs significantly from the established practice, which since its enactment in the early 19th century, has mainly been invoked at the governor's request, and thus carries a high risk of being interpreted as an abuse of federal authority. The Trump administration already has a precedent of being stopped by the courts for overstepping federal authority after deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles and Portland.

Intensifying Conflict, Not Building Peace

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals who have promoted reconciliation, peaceful resolution, and cooperation between nations or peoples. However, President Donald Trump's response to Chicago is in direct opposition to this standard. In Chicago, immigration enforcement agents have already stirred controversy with aggressive methods, such as using Blackhawk helicopters to enter apartments and deploying tear gas near schools. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has criticized the situation, stating, "The federal government is out of control, and this is one of the most dangerous times in American history," and has even filed a lawsuit against the federal government. If the 'Insurrection Act' is invoked in this situation, it is highly likely to escalate political conflict into extreme legal battles and physical clashes.

Peace cannot be achieved through confrontation, threats, and the mobilization of force. President Donald Trump's actions, under the guise of maintaining domestic order, are fostering fear and division, which undermines the value of peace. His approach of threatening military intervention instead of resolving issues through legal procedures and dialogue stands in stark contrast to the basic qualities a Peace Prize laureate must possess: a spirit of inclusion and reconciliation. Therefore, his threat to use the 'Insurrection Act' and his hardline domestic security response clearly demonstrate that he is a figure far removed from winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
