Lee Jae-yong Receives 11.16 Million Samsung Electronics Shares as Gift from Hong Ra-hee… Stake Rises from 1.58% to 1.75%

SEOUL — Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong is set to receive approximately 2.6 trillion won ($1.9 billion) worth of company shares from Leeum Museum of Art Honorary Director Hong Ra-hee, further solidifying his stake in the tech giant.

According to a regulatory filing by Samsung Electronics on the 13th, Honorary Director Hong will gift 11,158,000 shares (a 0.17% stake) to Chairman Lee.

Based on Samsung Electronics' closing price of 232,000 won on the day of the announcement, the total value of the gift amounts to roughly 2.6 trillion won. The scheduled transfer date is November 12.

Currently, Chairman Lee holds 105,219,053 shares of Samsung Electronics, translating to a 1.58% stake. Upon completion of the transfer, his holdings will increase to 116,377,053 shares, raising his ownership to 1.75%—an increase of 0.17 percentage points. Meanwhile, Hong's stake will decrease from 0.99% to 0.82%, also a 0.17 percentage point drop.

Industry insiders note that because this transaction is an intra-family transfer, its immediate impact on the wider stock market is expected to be limited.

This transaction follows a series of recent asset reallocations. Back in September, Hong sold a 0.11% stake in Samsung Electronics—valued at approximately 1.9 trillion won—to Chairman Lee, a move widely attributed to paying off financial institution loans incurred to settle inheritance taxes. Additionally, in January, Hong gifted her entire stake in Samsung C&T (1,808,577 shares, or 1.06%) to Chairman Lee, raising his common stock ownership in Samsung C&T from 19.93% to 20.99%.
