Gwangmyeong, South Korea – The Seoul Olympic Memorial National Sports Promotion Foundation’s Horse Racing and Motorboat Racing Headquarters has announced the successful completion of a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system at the iconic Gwangmyeong Speedway. The system is set to commence operations on [date].
The distinctive, helmet-shaped Gwangmyeong Speedway presented unique challenges for conventional rooftop solar panel installations due to its architectural design. To overcome these hurdles, the headquarters conducted extensive research, including site visits to successful BIPV projects, participation in product exhibitions, and consultations with energy experts. After a rigorous selection process, the foundation invested approximately 7.8 billion won to install the custom-designed BIPV system over a three-month period beginning in October.
Once fully operational, the BIPV system is expected to generate approximately 34,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power the speedway's lighting for two months. This clean energy solution is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 21.3 tons per year, contributing to South Korea's ongoing efforts to combat climate change.
In addition to the BIPV system, the headquarters is collaborating with private partners to construct a block-type solar power generation facility in a portion of the speedway's sixth parking lot. This initiative will further expand the speedway's renewable energy capacity and solidify its commitment to environmental sustainability.
