South Korea’s government is set to significantly expand its Export Voucher program in the coming year, aiming to provide more comprehensive support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as they navigate the complexities of global markets. This initiative is designed to alleviate the financial burden associated with exporting and accelerate the growth of Korean businesses on the international stage.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, in collaboration with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), announced that the budget for the industrial voucher program will increase by 5 billion won to 361 billion won in 2024. Additionally, the number of participating companies is expected to grow from 823 to 1,000.

A Proven Success

Introduced in 2017, the Export Voucher program has already demonstrated its effectiveness in assisting Korean companies in their export endeavors. By providing online coupons, SMEs can access a wide range of export support services, including overseas marketing, international certification, and logistics. Two notable examples highlight the program's impact:

Company C, a cybersecurity firm, utilized the voucher to investigate potential patent infringement claims related to its products. The investigation revealed no infringement but led to a valuable collaboration with a US competitor who recognized the company's innovative technology. As a result, Company C's products are now being sold in 50 countries worldwide.
Company D, a semiconductor equipment component manufacturer, faced financial challenges in participating in the prestigious Semicon West exhibition. The export voucher enabled the company to cover costs such as booth rental and airfare, ultimately leading to new export opportunities for its 3D printed components.

Expanding Support and Streamlining Processes

The expanded program will focus on supporting SMEs in various sectors, including materials, components, equipment, consumer goods, services, and green industries. Companies will be able to apply for vouchers worth up to 100 million won for industrial projects and 200 million won for mid-sized enterprises.

To facilitate quicker access to these funds, the government plans to expedite the application and approval process. While the final selection of participating companies is usually announced in late February, the results for the mid-sized enterprise voucher program will be released in January, and the industrial voucher program results will be announced no later than mid-February.

Addressing Global Challenges

Jeon Chun-woo, Deputy President and Head of the SME Division at KOTRA, emphasized the program's role in helping Korean SMEs navigate the evolving global trade landscape. "Through the Export Voucher program, we aim to equip Korean SMEs with the tools and resources they need to adapt to changing market conditions and overcome export-related challenges," he said.

By providing targeted support and streamlining administrative procedures, the South Korean government is signaling its commitment to fostering a more competitive and export-oriented business environment. As the country continues to face economic uncertainties, the expanded Export Voucher program is expected to play a crucial role in driving growth and innovation within the SME sector.
