In Argentina's internet communications market, satellite broadband is showing rapid growth and establishing a new trend. In contrast, 5G network penetration is comparatively slow, presenting a striking contrast.

According to recent data from Argentina's telecommunications regulatory body (Enacom), the number of satellite internet subscribers reached 217,812 as of the end of June. This marks a remarkable increase from 2,992 in the fourth quarter of 2023, showing an explosive market expansion in just over two years. This growth is attributed to the entry of Starlink, which accounts for 90-95% of the market share. Satellite communication networks have particularly high penetration rates in provinces like Neuquén, Catamarca, and Tierra del Fuego, where the introduction of traditional broadband technology was difficult due to geographical constraints.

Currently, satellite technology accounts for 1.78% of all fixed internet connections, making it the third largest in market share after fiber optics with 44.5% and cable modems with 43.4%. Argentina has a total of 12.3 million fixed internet subscribers, with an increase of 706,000 in the first half of 2025 alone, and the national average internet speed is 224.8 Mbps.

Meanwhile, the deployment of 5G networks is progressing more slowly than expected. Since the spectrum allocation in October 2023, only 1,190 5G base stations have been registered with Enacom, with most concentrated in major cities like Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Santa Fe. 4G networks saw an addition of 305 sites during the first half of 2025, bringing the total to 29,543. This situation suggests that satellite communication has emerged as a crucial alternative for bridging the digital divide in rural areas.
