Mexico Warns Citizens of AI Voice Cloning Fraud

Mexico City – The Mexican Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection has issued a warning to the public about the rising threat of voice cloning fraud using artificial intelligence (AI). This alert comes as voice messaging becomes increasingly prevalent in daily communication, creating new avenues for scammers.

The agency highlighted that fraudsters are exploiting AI technology to mimic individuals' voices, enabling them to make fraudulent requests, often for financial assistance. Experts have identified common tactics used by these criminals, including employing urgent tones to induce panic and fabricating stories of emergencies like robberies, accidents, or kidnappings to coerce victims into immediate money transfers.

In response to this growing concern, the General Directorate of Service Management, Cybersecurity, and Technological Development has advised citizens to remain calm and verify any suspicious requests through alternative communication channels. The agency also urges the public to avoid answering calls or messages from unknown numbers and to refrain from sharing personal information without confirming the source's authenticity.

Furthermore, citizens are advised to safeguard their voice privacy by limiting the sharing of voice recordings on social media and other platforms. By staying vigilant and informed, individuals can better protect themselves from falling victim to these sophisticated scams.
