CHAMPERICO, GUATEMALA - A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake rattled the Pacific coast of Guatemala early Saturday, prompting local authorities to assess potential damage and threats. The seismic event occurred at 5:40 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the ocean approximately 102 kilometers south-southwest of the coastal town of Champerico.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s coordinates were recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, situated at 13.51 degrees North latitude and 92.40 degrees West longitude. The shallow nature of the tremor meant that residents along the coast were likely to have experienced significant shaking.

Initial reports from Guatemala’s disaster management agency indicate there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage in the region. Authorities have issued a public safety advisory, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any damage to emergency services.

Geologically, this region is highly susceptible to seismic activity as it lies on the “Ring of Fire,” a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning, though officials are continuing to monitor sea-level data.

"We are in close communication with local and municipal emergency coordinators to ensure all areas are checked for potential damage, particularly in coastal communities," a government spokesperson said in a statement. "The safety of our citizens is our top priority."

The event serves as a reminder of the constant seismic risk facing communities in this part of Central America. As of now, life is returning to normal for many residents, but the response and monitoring efforts continue.
