Hosted by the Federation of Korean Residents in Yanbian (President Hwang Kyung-shik) and sponsored by the Overseas Koreans Agency and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Shenyang, this annual event serves as a cornerstone for local Koreans to strengthen bonds, foster harmony, and create shared memories with their families and neighbors.

Overcoming the Rain: Indoor Festivities Kick Off

Morning showers temporarily shifted the opening ceremony and initial indoor matches into the Yanbian Korean International School gymnasium. The event commenced in high spirits with celebratory performances featuring traditional Yanbian songs and a traditional percussion troupe (pungmulpae), setting an energetic tone for the day.

Key dignitaries from the Northeast China Korean community attended to support the participants, including Consul General Kim Sung-min of the ROK Consulate General in Shenyang and Kim Jung-yeol, President of the Federation of Korean Associations in Northeast China.

Inside the gymnasium, participants of all generations engaged in traditional and fun games such as shuttlecock kicking (jegichagi), bottle-standing challenges, and hula-hoop contests. The adverse weather failed to dampen spirits as families and neighbors cheered each other on, exchanging laughter and affection.

An Afternoon on the Green Turf

As the rain cleared around midday, the festival transitioned to the lush green outdoor turf fields. A series of dynamic sports competitions followed, including tee-ball, dodgeball, kickball, and tug-of-war. The field buzzed with excitement as children and parents teamed up to run and cheer together.

Adding to the community atmosphere, the Yanbian Korean International School Parent Association operated a bustling food bazaar around the playground. A portion of the proceeds raised from the bazaar will be meaningfully allocated to support the students of the school.

Consular Support and Conclusion

Alongside the athletic events, the ROK Consulate General in Shenyang operated a mobile consular service inside the school meeting rooms, providing essential administrative convenience and civil petition support to local residents who find it difficult to visit the consulate in person.

The festival concluded with a lively lucky draw, distributing numerous gifts to participants. Families and community members wrapped up the day by promising to meet again next year. For overseas Korean communities, gatherings where children and adults alike can run, laugh, and unite hold profound significance—offering children cherished memories of community bonds and providing adults a precious opportunity to catch up and reaffirm their shared heritage.
