Marine Cable Car at the Center of Diverse Attractions, Effect of Being Selected for Korea Tourism 100 a Big Boost

Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do Province, has rapidly emerged as a new 'hot place' with an explosive increase in tourists during the Golden Holiday in May. It is estimated that approximately 200,000 tourists visited Mokpo during the holiday period, and the Mokpo Marine Cable Car, in particular, saw over 10,000 daily visitors on weekends, marking the highest number since its opening in 2019 and injecting vitality into the local economy.

Prior to the holiday, global online travel platform Booking.com announced that Mokpo ranked second in domestic travel destination search rankings, following Pohang, already proving its immense popularity. During the actual holiday, various parts of Mokpo city were crowded with tourist vehicles and people from all over the country, and long queues formed endlessly at famous restaurants. Accommodation facilities were also fully booked months in advance, leading to inconvenience for some tourists who could not find lodging.

The Mokpo Marine Cable Car is undoubtedly the biggest factor in Mokpo's rise as a popular tourist city. Having been selected for the 'Korea Tourism 100' for three consecutive times since 2021, the Mokpo Marine Cable Car boasts overwhelming popularity, offering a special experience to take in the panoramic views of the West Sea, the beautiful archipelago, and the diverse scenery of Mokpo city at a glance.

Mokpo's charm is not limited to the marine cable car. The rich and delicious cuisine unique to the southern region attracts food lovers. Fresh seafood and a variety of local dishes are an indispensable pleasure of Mokpo tourism. In addition, the Modern History Museum and the Modern Culture Street are spaces that preserve the traces of Korean modern history, offering a special experience to appreciate unique architectural styles and reflect on historical significance. In this way, Mokpo, where the sea, mountains, history, and culture harmoniously blend, is gaining attention as a travel destination with diverse attractions.

Mokpo's potential as a tourist city was already foreseen at the beginning of this year. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization selected a total of three places in Mokpo for the '2025-2026 Korea Tourism 100' – the Mokpo Marine Cable Car and the Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 and 2 – drawing the attention of domestic and international travelers. This is interpreted as a result of the official recognition of Mokpo's excellent tourism resources and attractions.

Regarding the enthusiastic influx of tourists to Mokpo during this holiday period, the local tourism industry expresses surprise while emphasizing the need for cautious forecasts and the preparation of countermeasures. A tourism expert analyzed, "During the holiday, much more tourists than expected visited Mokpo, and local restaurants, accommodations, and car rental companies showed signs of renewed vitality. This is a significant opportunity that confirmed Mokpo's potential as a future growth engine through the synergy of excellent tourism resources such as the Mokpo Marine Cable Car, abundant southern food, history, culture, and beautiful marine scenery."

Furthermore, he emphasized, "It seems to be the effect of recent active media marketing that has made Mokpo's attractive tourism products known nationwide. Now is a golden opportunity for Mokpo to solidify its position as a representative tourism city of Korea. As national attention is focused on Mokpo, the citizens of Mokpo must also make it a way of life to greet visitors kindly and send them off warmly, making it a new competitive edge."

A review from a traveler who stayed at a guesthouse in the original downtown area of Mokpo well illustrates this positive atmosphere. One traveler who almost gave up on the trip due to difficulty in booking accommodation shared a positive experience, saying, "I was lucky to book and enjoyed a clean and satisfactory family trip. The main tourist attractions were close, making walking tours convenient, and the detailed guidance before and after the visit made the trip comfortable."

Building on the successful attraction of tourists during this holiday period, Mokpo City is expected to solidify its position as a leading marine tourism city in Korea through the development of even more diverse tourism content and active promotional marketing. Efforts to improve tourism infrastructure, such as expanding accommodation facilities and improving transportation convenience, along with the kind attitude and welcoming culture of its citizens, will be important driving forces for Mokpo's sustainable tourism development.
