Pope Francis Holds Surprise Audience with King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their 20th Anniversary

Vatican City - In a remarkable and unexpected turn of events, Pope Francis held a private audience with King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom at the Vatican on Tuesday. The impromptu meeting coincided with the 20th wedding anniversary of the Royal couple.

The audience was particularly significant given Pope Francis's recent health concerns. The 88-year-old Pontiff, who recently spent 38 days in hospital receiving treatment for a severe respiratory illness, is currently recuperating at his residence within the Vatican, the Domus Sanctae Marthae. It was there that he received the King and Queen.

A brief statement released by the Holy See confirmed the encounter, noting that "The Holy Father offered his best wishes to the King and Queen on their anniversary, and His Majesty reciprocated by wishing the Pope a swift recovery."

The Royal couple's visit to the Vatican was initially scheduled for Monday, the third day of their state visit to Italy. However, the meeting was postponed due to the Pope's reported ill health. The surprise audience on Tuesday underscores the importance both parties placed on the meeting. International media outlets reported observing a motorcade of unidentified vehicles entering one of the Vatican gates, a development later officially confirmed by the Vatican press office.

This meeting is not the first encounter between King Charles III and Queen Camilla with Pope Francis. They previously met on April 4, 2017, during another visit to the Vatican. Furthermore, King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, had the occasion to greet the Pope on October 13, 2019, during the canonization ceremony of Saint John Henry Newman.

Adding a personal touch to the state visit, King Charles III had publicly stated his prayers for Pope Francis's well-being in comments made to the Italian press the previous day.

The King and Queen are scheduled to conclude their Italian state visit with a trip to Ravenna on Wednesday. Their itinerary in Italy included meetings with prominent figures such as Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

During an address to the Italian Parliament, King Charles III acknowledged his 20th anniversary with Queen Camilla, referring to it as a "special day." He remarked, "The Queen and I are deeply touched to be in Italy for our first state visit since the Accession. This is particularly special as today marks the 20th anniversary of our marriage."

King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who were officially crowned in September 2022, were married on April 9, 2005. Their state visit to Italy, therefore, carries added significance as it aligns with this important personal milestone. The unexpected audience with Pope Francis serves as a notable moment in their anniversary celebrations and highlights the ongoing diplomatic and personal connections between the United Kingdom and the Holy See.
