Daejeon, South Korea – South Korea is intensifying its efforts to secure a position among the world's top five bio powerhouses, with a strong emphasis on fostering innovative drug development. The Ministry of Economy and Finance's New Growth Strategy Planning and Promotion Team (NGSPPT) recently convened a meeting in Daejeon to evaluate the progress and strategies for achieving this ambitious goal.

The meeting, held at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, focused on implementing the "Three Major Transformations of the Korean Bio Industry" strategy, which encompasses infrastructure, R&D, and industrial development. Key discussion points included enhancing collaboration between bio clusters nationwide, revolutionizing the bio R&D system, and providing crucial financial support to propel company growth.

Daejeon, recognized as a leading R&D hub, is considered a critical player in this national endeavor. The city's robust infrastructure, exemplified by the Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone, provides a fertile ground for bio innovation. Daejeon's strengths lie in its high concentration of research institutes, universities, and skilled professionals, contributing to its top rankings in regional science and technology innovation.

A highlight of the event was the NGSPPT's visit to Orum Therapeutics, a prominent anti-cancer drug developer. The company shared updates on its FDA clinical trial approvals and its recent technology transfer deal with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, showcasing Daejeon's capacity for cutting-edge bio research.

Daejeon city officials emphasized their commitment to nurturing the bio industry through strategic initiatives, including establishing advanced production facilities and investment platforms. The NGSPPT underscored the importance of organic collaboration between the nation's bio clusters and called upon Daejeon to play a leading role in driving innovation. The South Korean government reiterated its commitment to providing unwavering support for the bio industry's growth, aiming to solidify the nation's position as a global bio leader.
