South Jeolla Province, a burgeoning hub for clean energy in South Korea, is making significant strides in its ambition to penetrate the rapidly expanding renewable energy market of Indonesia. A recent market exploration mission to Jakarta in April has yielded promising results, including initial export agreements and the establishment of crucial technological cooperation frameworks, signaling a strategic move to capitalize on Southeast Asia's largest economy's green energy transition.
The '2025 Energy-Focused Indonesia Market Exploration Team,' a collaborative initiative between the South Jeolla Provincial Government and the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), strategically participated in Solartech Indonesia 2025. This premier regional exhibition provided a vital platform for ten leading energy enterprises from South Jeolla to engage directly with potential Indonesian partners. The delegation conducted an impressive 172 business consultations with 118 local buyers, culminating in the signing of a $50,000 export memorandum of understanding (MOU), a tangible first step in their market entry strategy.
The diverse portfolio of participating South Korean companies showcased the breadth of the province's clean energy capabilities. These included Kyung Hyang Industry, specializing in foam insulation critical for energy efficiency; DMT, a manufacturer of essential expansion joints for infrastructure projects; BKEnergy, with its expertise in innovative floating solar power solutions and hydrogen generators; SWICO Jinkwang, offering advanced gas and epoxy insulated circuit breakers for reliable power distribution; Korea Grid Forming, a leader in high-speed real-time digital simulators and grid-forming inverters vital for grid stability with increasing renewable penetration; MTS, providing industrial valves for energy-related applications; Ujin Techno, a supplier of high and low voltage cables and undergrounding infrastructure; ELT, showcasing its mobile PV-ESS (photovoltaic-energy storage system) power generation units for flexible energy deployment; Turbine Crew, with its cutting-edge smart poles and drone wireless charging systems; and TDL, a pioneer in the development of all-solid-state battery technology.
The on-the-ground engagement proved fruitful. DMT successfully secured a $50,000 export MOU for its expansion joints, paving the way for future collaborations. BKEnergy forged a technological cooperation MOU with a local Indonesian entity, establishing a solid foundation for joint ventures in the renewable energy sector. Ujin Techno made significant inroads with Indonesia's state-owned electricity giant, PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara), exploring opportunities to supply its power cables to PLN's extensive network. ELT is actively pursuing a promising pilot project in North Sulawesi, deploying its mobile PV-ESS units to address local energy needs.
Further highlighting the technological prowess of the South Korean delegation, Turbine Crew garnered significant attention, receiving invitations for technology presentations from prominent Indonesian state-owned construction firm Wijaya Karya (WIKA) and the international engineering consultancy SMEC. TDL is strategically leveraging its local Indonesian subsidiary to aggressively expand its market share in the burgeoning electric motorcycle battery pack segment. MTS is currently engaged in discussions with a local partner regarding potential technology transfer and collaborative production initiatives. Korea Grid Forming is poised to showcase its advanced grid-forming inverter technology through a demonstration project with the Indonesian state-owned electricity company, PLN, a crucial step towards potential adoption.
Beyond individual company achievements, the participating South Korean enterprises identified significant potential for synergistic collaborations, leveraging their complementary products and technologies in areas such as floating solar power installations, smart city infrastructure incorporating renewable energy, advanced power cable solutions, and sophisticated grid stability technologies like high-speed real-time digital simulators.
Recognizing the importance of facilitating market entry, the South Jeolla Provincial Government and KOTRA provided comprehensive support to the participating companies. This included assistance with air travel costs, the shipment of exhibition materials, professional interpretation services, and local transportation. Crucially, a dedicated seminar on the Indonesian renewable energy market trends and a valuable buyer networking session were organized on the eve of the exhibition, equipping the South Korean delegation with essential insights into the local market dynamics and fostering direct connections with potential Indonesian partners.
Indonesia presents a compelling market for renewable energy technologies, driven by ambitious government targets. The nation aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy in its energy mix to 23% by 2025 and has set an ambitious goal of adding 4.68 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity by 2030. The recent approval of a substantial 5,746 MW of rooftop solar installations between 2024 and 2028 underscores the country's commitment to solar energy development, a key focus of discussions at Solartech Indonesia 2025, which saw active engagement in expanding solar manufacturing and investment.
Shin Hyun-gon, Head of International Cooperation for South Jeolla Province, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, stating, "Energy is a strategic industry that South Jeolla Province is focusing on developing. Through this market exploration team, we have effectively showcased the technological capabilities of our companies within the Indonesian renewable energy sector and successfully laid the groundwork for entering this promising emerging market. We are committed to strengthening our post-mission support to ensure that the signed MOUs and ongoing pilot project outcomes translate into concrete export contracts."
South Jeolla Province boasts a robust and diverse clean energy industrial base, encompassing key sectors such as offshore wind power, hydrogen fuel cell technology, solar energy generation, and advanced energy storage systems. As the largest producer of renewable energy within South Korea, the province is actively spearheading the nation's transition towards carbon neutrality and is strategically positioning itself as a pivotal national energy hub for the future.
