Qualcomm is accelerating its competition in the AI smartphone application processor (AP) market by unveiling a next-gen Snapdragon with dramatically enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) performance.

By raising processing speeds to 5 GHz for the first time in a mobile processor while reducing latency and power consumption during data processing, the company aims to preempt high-performance mobile AP demand driven by the proliferation of on-device AI.

According to industry sources on the 20th, Qualcomm will host its annual tech event, 'Snapdragon Summit 2026,' from September 22 to 24 (local time) in Maui, Hawaii, where it plans to reveal its next-generation Snapdragon premium mobile platform. Qualcomm has set this year's event theme as "Snapdragon for the Agentic Era" and will showcase major new products and technologies, including the next-gen mobile platform.

The most notable change in the new product is processing performance. Qualcomm has applied an Oryon central processing unit (CPU) with a maximum operating frequency raised to 5 GHz in the next-gen Snapdragon.

Operating frequency indicates how fast a processor operates per second; higher frequencies allow more tasks to be processed in the same amount of time. This is higher than the maximum operating frequency of 4.74 GHz found in the current flagship product, the 'Snapdragon 8 Elite 5th Generation,' marking the first time 5 GHz has been applied to a mobile CPU.

Technologies to enhance data processing efficiency have also been newly introduced. 'Oryon Flex Cache' stores data required for computations directly inside the CPU for immediate use. By reducing the number of times data is fetched from external memory, processing speeds are accelerated.

For the graphics processing unit (GPU), an AI-dedicated computation unit is being adopted for the first time. 'Adreno Neural Fusion' performs AI computations directly inside the GPU, reducing the time and power consumption required to exchange data.

The performance of the neural processing unit (NPU), which handles AI computations, is also elevated. It newly applies the 'Element Accelerator' to quickly handle complex computations required for agentic AI, and increases the memory capacity available to the NPU by 50%.

At this summit, Qualcomm will introduce two new products in the next-gen Snapdragon 8 Elite series. The top-tier model will feature a 5 GHz-class CPU along with high-end GPU and memory specifications, while the other model will feature lowered specifications. This strategy aims to expand choices by diversifying the product lineup as the premium smartphone market becomes more segmented.
