Galaxy Z Series to Unveil in New York, Will AI and Ultra-Slim Design Open New Horizons for Foldables?

Samsung Electronics is pulling out all the stops to re-energize the somewhat stagnant foldable phone market. On July 9th (local time) in Brooklyn, New York, Galaxy Unpacked 2025 will unveil the next-generation foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Fold7, to the world. Notably, this Unpacked event marks its return to New York after three years, since August 2022, signaling Samsung's significant expectations for foldable phone innovation.

“Ultra Experience, Ready to Unfold Wider”: Innovative Hardware and Design

The slogan for this Galaxy Unpacked is "Ultra Experience, Ready to Unfold Wider." This hints at the integration of the performance and experience of the 'Ultra' model, the highest-tier of the Galaxy S series, into foldable phones. Samsung previously teased on its Newsroom that the thinnest and lightest Z series device to date would be revealed, significantly raising expectations for design and portability.

The new Z series is expected to not only be thinner and lighter but also make significant progress in addressing common foldable phone issues such as crease reduction and durability enhancement. It's highly probable that a new hinge design and material innovations will enable a smoother display and improved water and dust resistance ratings. Especially, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is widely anticipated to maximize user convenience by offering a larger cover display, allowing various tasks to be performed without unfolding the phone. Some also predict that the long-standing challenge of Under Display Camera (UDC) technology in foldable phones will be further advanced, minimizing the presence of the front camera.

Expansion of Galaxy AI: “An Everyday Companion that Understands User Intent and Reacts in Real Time”

In its invitation, Samsung stated, "Smartphones are no longer just tools that contain various apps and functions. They are now evolving into everyday companions that understand user intent and react in real time," emphasizing the innovation in the artificial intelligence (AI) experience. This suggests that Galaxy AI, first introduced with the Galaxy S24 series earlier this year, will be optimized for foldable phones and implemented in a more powerful form.

The Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Fold7 are expected to feature significantly enhanced on-device AI capabilities. Existing Galaxy AI functions such as Live Translate, Note Assist, and Circle to Search will synergize with the unique form factor of foldable phones, elevating the user experience. For example, AI could automatically remove backgrounds during video calls in Flex Mode, or the wider screen in Fold Mode could enable more precise image editing and creative activities.

Notably, there are predictions that the Galaxy Z Flip7 will be equipped with Samsung's self-developed mobile application processor (AP), the Exynos 2500. The Exynos 2500 is known for its excellent performance and AI processing capabilities, rivaling Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon chipsets, and is expected to play a crucial role in the performance and AI functionality of foldable phones. This will enable faster and more efficient on-device AI processing, allowing users to utilize various AI functions without a network connection.

A New Turning Point for the Foldable Phone Market: Samsung’s Challenges and Tasks

Despite a global economic slowdown and a general slump in the smartphone market, the foldable phone market has continued to grow steadily, although its growth rate has somewhat slowed. In particular, the aggressive entry and technological advancements of Chinese manufacturers pose new challenges for Samsung Electronics.

At this juncture, Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Fold7 will be a crucial watershed in determining the direction of the foldable phone market. All eyes are on whether they can stimulate consumer purchasing sentiment and solidify the position of foldable phones in the premium smartphone market by leveraging their 'ultra-class' performance, ultra-slim design, and innovative AI experience. Through this Unpacked event, Samsung is expected to go beyond simply unveiling new products, demonstrating its vision for the future of mobile technology and its commitment to leading the popularization of foldable phones. With global attention focused on the event, Galaxy Unpacked 2025, unfolding in New York on July 9th, will be an arena of innovation that will breathe new life into the mobile market.
