Seoul, South Korea – The Yoo Young Academic Foundation announced on November 6 that translator Park Sanho has been selected as the recipient of the 18th Yoo Young Translation Award.

Park was recognized for his translation of Marilynne Robinson's novel Lila, a Pulitzer Prize and Park Kyung-ri Literature Award winner. The novel delves deep into the themes of human connection and the distrust that can arise between individuals, particularly those who have been marginalized.

The award committee commended Park's "sensitive and highly readable translation of the original text, which is both complex and lengthy, and accurately depicts the author's exploration of theological issues and the lives of the marginalized."

Park holds degrees from Hanyang University and Brunel University London and has been working as a professional translator for many years. His translation credits include Lights in the Plenum, Celestial Bodies, The Women's Talking Book, If I Am Missing, Child 44, and The Knife of Never Letting Go.

The award was selected from a pool of 895 English literature translations published between January and December 2023. The final selection was made by a panel of judges, including eminent scholars in English literature.

The Yoo Young Translation Award, established in 2007 by the family of the late Professor Yoo Young of Yonsei University, honors his lifelong dedication to English literature research and translation. The award aims to promote translation culture in Korean society.

The award ceremony will be held on November 15 at 6 PM at the Yonsei University Alumni Association. Pak will receive a trophy and a prize of 10 million won. Prior to the ceremony, the Yoo Young Academic Foundation and the Yonsei University BK Business Unit will co-host the 9th Yoo Young Translation Symposium, titled "Women-Poetry-Translation," at 2 PM in the same venue.
