Saudi-led Coalition Retakes Key Areas; Houthis Retaliate with Strikes on Saudi Airports

Foreign media reported on the 5th (local time) that the Saudi-led coalition has recaptured several key regions in Yemen previously controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

According to British daily The Guardian and other sources, Yemeni government officials stated that the Saudi-led coalition recaptured the strategic locations of Dhubab, Bab, and Hodeidah, north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.

Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition announced the launch of a military operation to retake territory from the Houthis, mounting a large-scale offensive starting that day. The ground operations are being led by the Yemeni government forces, with air support provided by the Saudi military.

Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the coalition, stated, "One hundred fighter jets are supporting the coalition. The coalition has secured air defense rights over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and destroyed hundreds of Houthi rebel targets."

He added that coalition airstrikes hit Houthi military targets in Hodeidah, destroying weapons depots and underwater mine storage facilities, while thwarting attacks targeting the southern Red Sea shipping lanes.

The Houthi rebels' counterattack has also been formidable.

The Houthi rebels announced that in the process of advancing toward Taiz, Yemen's strategic third-largest city, they captured Turbah, a key stronghold of government forces.

A local police source stated, "We have received information that the Houthi rebels have taken control of the al-Safiya area and blocked major roads," while a Yemeni military official confirmed that the Houthis have seized supply routes in the area and are besieging Taiz.

According to AFP, fighting surrounding Taiz resulted in over 70 deaths in a single day.

Furthermore, the Houthi rebels intensified their attacks on Saudi Arabia by launching ballistic missiles and drones toward Riyadh's airport and Aramco oil facilities on the same day.

The United States is observed to be indirectly supporting the Saudi-led coalition—such as by providing intelligence for operations—rather than participating directly in military attacks.

When asked whether the Saudi-led coalition coordinated its military operations with the United States, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio only mentioned that a defense agreement is in place between the United States and Saudi Arabia, declining to disclose specific details.
