The Asia Korean Council Federation (Chairman Yoon Hee, hereinafter AKCF), a pivotal organization uniting Korean associations across the Asian continent, has officially announced its decision to host its 25th annual convention in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from June 11th to 14th, 2025. This significant event, which also incorporates the AKCF's Regular General Meeting, marks Cambodia's return as host after a 16-year hiatus since the 2nd AKCF Convention was held in the Cambodian capital in March 2009.
Comprised of current and former leaders representing 73 Korean associations spanning 22 Asian nations, the AKCF serves as a crucial platform for fostering solidarity and cooperation among the Korean diaspora in the region. The federation has a long-standing tradition of convening its Regular General Meeting in the first half of each year, with member countries taking turns to host. Since its inaugural convention in Laos in 2008, the AKCF has successfully organized gatherings in key Asian hubs, including Hanoi, Vietnam in April 2023, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late June 2024.
The upcoming convention in Phnom Penh holds particular significance as it will once again bring together influential figures from the Korean communities across Asia. The agenda extends beyond the AKCF's internal affairs, as the event will also concurrently host the Regular General Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Korean Traders Association (AKT) and the prestigious Asia-Pacific Korean Business Convention. Adding further momentum to the Business Convention is the recent establishment of the Asia-Pacific Korean Traders Association Cambodia Federation in February 2025, under the leadership of Chairman Hong Seung-kyun. While the AKCF had initially slated the convention for May, a strategic decision was made to postpone the event to June. This adjustment was attributed to the prevailing uncertainties surrounding the domestic political landscape in some member countries and the fluid nature of the international geopolitical situation. The AKCF leadership prioritized the safety and optimal participation of its members, deeming a slight delay necessary to ensure a stable and conducive environment for the important deliberations and networking activities planned.
The AKCF's core mission revolves around strengthening the bonds of friendship and unity among the leaders and Korean associations in its member nations. The foundation of the AKCF dates back to 2007, with Chairman Seung Eun-ho of the prominent Korindo Group in Jakarta, Indonesia, serving as its inaugural leader. He was succeeded by Chairman Shim Sang-man of KOTEC in Chennai, India. The chairmanship of the AKCF is a three-year term, with the incumbent also holding the concurrent position of Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Korean Traders Association, highlighting the close working relationship between the community and business arms of the Korean diaspora in Asia. The upcoming General Meeting in Phnom Penh will be particularly noteworthy as it will feature the election of the next AKCF Chairman, as the term of the current Chairman Yoon Hee, who manages a garment manufacturing company in Bangladesh and was elected in 2022, is drawing to a close. The election of a new leader will chart the course for the AKCF's activities and priorities for the next triennium.
Chung Myung-kyu, the Co-Chairman of the Cambodia Convention Organizing Committee and the current President of the Korean Association in Cambodia, expressed his confidence in the successful hosting of the landmark event. He stated, "We are leaving no stone unturned in our preparations to ensure the '2025 25th Asia Korean Council Federation Cambodia Convention,' which will be held at the prestigious Dara Airport Hotel in Phnom Penh this June, is a resounding success."
