OpenAI Saudi Employee Arrested by FBI for Allegedly Planting Recording Device in Executive Boardroom

A Saudi national and OpenAI engineer has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on charges of planting a recording device in the company's executive boardroom. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that the leakage of artificial intelligence technology is a matter tied to national security.

According to reports from the Associated Press (AP) and CNN on the 14th, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on the 13th that it had arrested and indicted 35-year-old Abdulrahman Al-Fozan, a Saudi Arabian national and OpenAI engineer. The man is accused of intercepting oral communications using electronic devices. He was arrested on the 9th and is currently being held in federal custody.

Combining announcements from OpenAI and explanations from the Department of Justice, the company discovered a sophisticated recording device planted by the arrested man on August 30th while inspecting the executive boardroom. The recording device was wrapped in tissue paper and plugged into a USB port behind a television screen. The company believes the recording device had been installed in the executive boardroom for two days. The arrested man was captured on the company's security cameras, showing him entering and leaving the boardroom—where confidential meetings are held—several times. The discovered recording device was designed for audio monitoring and featured advanced encryption capabilities and data transmission mechanisms. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that an additional similar recording device was found in Al-Fozan’s backpack. OpenAI reported that it has secured additional evidence showing the man planned to install recording devices in other locations within the building for the purpose of recording meeting contents.

The company has fired the man, who had been working as a product team engineer since joining last July. In a statement, OpenAI said, "At this time, there is no indication that this individual improperly accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data. We take the protection of our technology, data, and people extremely seriously, and this is a matter of national importance."

Amid intensifying competition in artificial intelligence technology, both within the industry and across nations, the United States is taking AI technology security issues very seriously. U.S. Federal Prosecutor Craig Misakian stated in a release, "Protecting U.S. tech companies is a national security issue." U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche posted on social media platform X, "The allegations that a Saudi national attempted to steal sensitive communications from OpenAI are taken very seriously. The theft of intellectual property related to cutting-edge superintelligence (SI) technology poses a grave threat to our national security."
