Ansan City has solidified its position as an international smart transportation hub, attracting a benchmarking visit from a delegation of Singapore's Land Transport Authority based on its advanced transportation technology. This visit serves as a significant milestone, acknowledging Ansan's innovative smart transportation system as a globally recognized precedent and offering crucial insights into the future direction of urban transportation.

On May 30, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) delegation from Singapore visited the Ansan City Urban Information Center to directly observe and benchmark Ansan's smart transportation system. This visit was part of their attendance at the '2025 Suwon ITS Asia-Pacific Congress,' held in Suwon from May 28 to 30. The primary objectives were to research advanced cases for enhancing Singapore's transportation policies and to explore potential avenues for collaboration. LTA officials, including Mr. Alvin Chia, Director of the Road Operations Department, expressed deep interest in Ansan City's smart transportation system.

Innovativeness of Ansan City's Smart Transportation System

Ansan City's smart transportation system, which integrates the latest information and communication technology (ICT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technology, is recognized as a leader in smart urban transportation in South Korea. The delegation closely examined Ansan's key transportation systems, particularly the following:

Real-time Traffic Information Collection and Provision System: Ansan City collects real-time traffic information through various sensors and CCTVs installed throughout the city, providing it to citizens to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate smooth traffic flow. This system also contributes to minimizing citizen inconvenience by responding quickly to unexpected situations.
Smart Intersections with AI-based Signal Control Technology: Smart intersections that automatically adjust traffic signals based on traffic volume using AI technology are effective in optimizing traffic flow and reducing unnecessary waiting times. This maximizes traffic efficiency and has an environmentally friendly effect by reducing carbon emissions.
City-wide Real-time Video Collection and Control System: The Ansan City Urban Information Center monitors real-time traffic conditions through numerous CCTVs installed across the city, analyzing and responding to traffic situations quickly based on this data. This integrated control system plays a crucial role in ensuring citizen safety by enabling rapid on-site assessment and response in the event of an accident.
Additionally, the delegation received explanations on Ansan City's Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) policy direction and operational strategies, engaging in in-depth discussions on the future development of transportation systems. Ansan City is accelerating the establishment and operation of ITS with the goal of realizing transportation welfare that prioritizes citizen safety and convenience, and this visit served as an opportunity for these efforts to be recognized internationally.

New Horizons for International Cooperation

Mr. Alvin Chia, Director of the Road Operations Department at LTA, expressed his admiration for Ansan City's technological capabilities, stating, "It was a very meaningful time to directly experience Ansan's advanced transportation system," and added, "We look forward to continuing close cooperation." This can be interpreted as a positive sign that Singapore may apply Ansan City's smart transportation technology to its own transportation policies, suggesting the possibility of expanded technological exchange and cooperation between the two cities in the future.

Mr. Jeon Deok-ju, Director-General of the Administrative Safety and Education Bureau of Ansan City, responded by saying, "Our city's smart transportation system is an advanced transportation model that fuses the latest information technology with transportation welfare for the safety and convenience of citizens," and "We hope this visit by the Singaporean delegation will serve as an opportunity to expand into international cooperation." Director-General Jeon's remarks emphasize that Ansan City aims to provide citizen-centric transportation services, beyond merely showcasing its technological prowess.

This visit by the Singapore Land Transport Authority delegation to Ansan City was more than just a benchmarking exercise; it became a significant opportunity to showcase the excellence of South Korea's smart urban transportation technology to the world. Ansan City is expected to leverage this visit to further strengthen international cooperation with Singapore and other countries, leading the globalization of South Korea's smart transportation system and presenting a new direction for future urban transportation. Ansan City's innovative transportation systems and development through international cooperation are anticipated to garner even more attention in the future.
