Pachora, Maharashtra - At least twelve people lost their lives and fifteen others were injured in a horrifying train accident near Pachora in the western Indian state of Maharashtra on Wednesday. The incident occurred when passengers on the Pushpak Express panicked after hearing rumors of a fire and pulled the emergency chain, bringing the train to a halt.
As passengers disembarked, they were tragically struck by the oncoming Karnataka Express traveling on a parallel track.
Sparks and Panic
Initial investigations suggest that sparks within one of the Pushpak Express coaches, possibly caused by a "hot axle" or "brake-binding," triggered the panic. This led to passengers erroneously believing the train was on fire.
Heartbreaking Scene
Videos circulating on social media captured the distressing aftermath, with passengers screaming and crying amidst the scene of dead bodies lying on the tracks.
Government Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep anguish and condolences to the bereaved families, while also assuring that authorities were providing all necessary assistance to the injured.
Both the Indian Railways Ministry and the Maharashtra state government announced compensation for the families of the deceased. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, emphasized the government's commitment to assisting the injured and coordinating with railway authorities for swift action.
Safety Concerns
This tragic incident once again raises serious concerns about safety within India's extensive railway network, despite ongoing modernization efforts. A 2022 report by the National Crime Records Bureau revealed a staggering number of train-related deaths in the country between 2017 and 2021.
