Kia is recalling over 80,000 Niro vehicles due to a wiring issue that could potentially affect the deployment of airbags and seat belts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on [date], citing a risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.

According to a report filed with the NHTSA, frequent adjustments to the front passenger seat can damage a wiring harness located beneath the seat. This harness controls critical safety features, including airbags and seat belt pretensioners. A damaged harness could result in airbags failing to deploy as intended, deploying unexpectedly, or failing to deactivate when occupied by a small child.

The recall affects approximately 82,550 Niro, Niro EV, and Niro PHEV vehicles manufactured between August 10, 2022, and March 13, 2023, and equipped with a manual front passenger seat.

Kia has emphasized that, as of [date], there have been no reports of crashes, fires, injuries, or fatalities related to this defect.

Kia dealers will inspect the wiring harness beneath the front passenger seat and install a protective cover to prevent future damage. If necessary, the wiring harness may be repaired or replaced. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail by March 14, 2023, and are advised to schedule an appointment with their nearest Kia dealership for a free inspection and repair.
