Chungnam Province has taken a meaningful step to honor individuals who embody the traditional values of filial piety, loyalty, and etiquette (Chung-Hyo-Ye) in their daily lives, while actively working to foster a robust culture of filial respect throughout local communities.

From September 15 to 17, over a 2-night and 3-day itinerary, the provincial government launched the "2026 First Healing Program Training for Exemplary Filial Sons and Daughters" in Jeju Island. A total of 68 exemplary individuals, recommended by local municipal governments and the Chungnam Federation of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, participated in this special retreat.

Amidst South Korea's rapid demographic shift toward a super-aging society, these devoted citizens have dedicated long years to caring for elderly family members and supporting their households with unwavering commitment. This training program was meticulously designed to express profound gratitude to these dedicated caregivers, alleviate their physical and mental burnout, and propagate the noble philosophy of filial piety into the broader social fabric.

During the 2-night, 3-day stay in Jeju, participants engaged in a diverse array of activities combining natural healing with cultural immersion. The itinerary featured tours of Jeju’s pristine natural landscapes and historical landmarks, designed to offer deep relaxation while reflecting on the profound meaning of filial devotion. Additionally, special healing lectures were organized to provide emotional support, enhance communication within families, and discuss modern approaches to coping with the psychological and physical challenges of long-term caregiving.

Building upon the success of this first session, Chungnam Province plans to host the second round of the training program this coming October. The provincial administration emphasizes that these initiatives are structured to transcend simple leisure trips or superficial recognition events. Instead, they serve as a strategic bridge connecting traditional Korean virtues—specifically Chung (loyalty/patriotism), Hyo (filial piety), and Ye (etiquette/respect)—with modern communitarian values such as mutual consideration, generational respect, and civic responsibility.

A senior official from Chungnam Province stated, "Filial piety, loyalty, and etiquette are not outdated concepts confined to the pages of history. Rather, they are fundamental spiritual assets that sustain our community by bridging generational divides, reinforcing family accountability, and encouraging neighborly compassion." The official further emphasized, "We are firmly committed to ensuring that the quiet, dedicated sacrifices of our unsung filial heroes are genuinely respected. Through continuous policy support and community engagement, we will expand these core values so that every citizen can resonate with them and practice them naturally in everyday life."

Looking ahead, Chungnam Province aims to institutionalize this program as part of its core regional welfare and culture policy. By continuously discovering and honoring model citizens who practice filial devotion, the province hopes to counteract the atomization of modern society, strengthen the safety net of family care, and pass down invaluable moral assets to the younger generations.
